Because the production was messed up at the last second, and made it sound horrible in quality. It sounds off from the other Metallica album's, which is why a lot of people don't like it. For me, Load and ReLoad were good for The Unforgiven Parts 1&2. And I thought the production was messed up by the producer, and was unfixable at the very last second before releasing St. Anger.
By the way, have you heard the band Death? I think you'd really like them, they're really simular to Metallica. If you do, I'd suggest Individual thought Patterns first.
