Well, this dude seems nice enough and all, but if he's not going to bother putting effort into our conversations, I'm not going to either. He obviously expects this chatting to go somewhere, but short nonsense messages like he keeps sending me are not really conducive to getting to know someone.

How am I supposed to respond to messages (particularly from someone I barely know) that just say things like this:
*snuggles* ^^ hehe

Ohh lol ok XD ^^
I don't even know what to say when I get messages from people I do know half the time (and the other half of the time I ramble for twenty years about one thing).

What a hassle.
Derp dude
Reminds me of my ex. He would get upset/kinda angry if I took too long (dat whopping 20 minutes!) replying to his texts, even though he often sent inane crap like that. Worse, when I'd try to actually have some fun by talking about things like dancing neon penguins, he'd also get upset, and would say he wasn't in the mood for it (??). It was like he wanted to suck the fun out of everything. There are many reasons why we didn't last, and that was one of them.

^ Maybe it's just because I'm not particularly social, but I really don't see the point in having conversations with someone at all if it's going to be like that.

Edit: A message I just got from someone I, once again, barely know:
i like being nice to people i care about.
Seriously, how do I answer this? "Good for you."? "Most people do."? :?

^ 'That's nice?' Lol.

Is this over Skype or on a forum KD? Some people can just be overly friendly sometimes or just plain creepy with stuff like that when you barely know them O.o

Squeely, your ex may have been friends with my ex. You weren't allowed to have fun or be random or he'd get in a huff  Or... maybe it's the same peso :O He wasn't called Will was he? xD

I am thinking.... I can't wait till bebes nap time. I'm running on five hours again >_< Needless to say, the 'sleep expert' well... actually my health visitor wasn't at all helpful.

Same here. It just added to the massive amount of problems we had. Texting him became a tedious chore.

His name was Anthony... Though, he was such a chronic liar, that I take even his name with a grain of salt. He lied about being a transmale, lied about having a band, accused me of cheating if I went out with friends, when I later looked at his account (that he was still "female" on) and saw that he posted a lot of things that would entice women to flirt with him while we were together. So... who knows what his real name is.

If your ex did the same things, maybe he's actually the same person.

Both actually. It's so weird. They also like saying things like "you're a sweet guy," and "I really like you," and "can I hug you?" Which would all be fine and dandy if they knew like... anything... about me lol. Although I feel like that last one is weird even if you do know someone well. :?

And they like telling me I'm cute without even having seen me. It's really bizarre, and somewhat off-putting.

I honestly have no idea. I started having inklings of wanting to break up with him early on, so I guess the fact that I stayed with the guy for seven months proves I have patience if nothing else  I could write a book on the guy, I find our fights and his psychosis oddly fascinating. I feel like I've barely even scratched the surface of how messed up he was.

Part of me even feels kinda bad for him, I mean maybe he has trouble helping it due to mental issues. Part of the reason why I stayed is I wanted to give him a fair chance, to see if things would improve... But one time, he got so mad that I lied to him, that he said all these things that really scared me (I thankfully wasn't at risk of physical harm because it was long-distance) and I became increasingly aware that I would never feel safe around him again as time went on.
