All of the main characters in TLK are stylized to some extent, and Zazu is no exception. Why they chose him to be a yellow-billed hornbill I don't know, but hornbills are pretty impressive African birds, and they even seem to have a "snooty" look to them, which might explain Zazu's personality.

As for real-life yellow-billed hornbills being freaky, I think they're pretty pleasant-looking compared to...say, the ground hornbill.

Maybe Disney made another error. Or, since it's so ugly, Disney had no choice but to make it child-safe. lol I have actually met people who mistake Zazu for a parrot.

awww, I don't think that first hornbill is that ugly. Zazu's just more cartoony, and they used blue for gray colors. from what I can tell, they made him more neat and proper in appearance too.
