Hmmm, if they're to help sustain a long distance relationship then fair play, but if they're exclusively online then I don't think they're that good. The thing that sets a romantic relationship aside from family/friendships is their physical aspect - something you don't get if it's just online. I wouldn't want to have one, honestly.

Opinion of online friendships?

I like my online friends more than most people I meet IRL. I think the chance of meeting someone like you is a lot higher online, since geography is no longer an issue. Since my personality type, INTJ, is the rarest amongst women, and many of my hobbies are things that people in my quote-unquote "peer group" (who honestly don't feel like my peers in any way tbh) simply don't do for whatever reason, this is important to me. Aside from the people who form my group of best friends (the four people who I've met in the past year who know each other and who all now talk with each other and me on Skype everyday), nearly all my friends are online for this reason.
