This story is about a young boy, almost ten years old; he has dark black hair and illuminating green eyes, His name was Dean. He lived in the sleepless city of Metropolis, Home of the legendary Superman. He kept himself alone in a log cabin along the top of the mountain that over looked the city.
His parents had passed long ago. Luckily his father was a well respected scientist so he was still able to maintain his education. As for his mother, he didn't know much about her. He always wondered why she left when he was an infant. He often asked himself would he ever see her again?
It mattered not to him, yet still he felt empty without his father beside him, He had no guidance in life and was on the path to self destruction. Little did he know his whole world was going to change, That night.
Chapter one: Darkness turns to Light
It was the first day of high school in Metropolis. Dean had been moved up through the grades fairly quickly, he was a freshman but he had only been in the sixth grade last year. The kid was smart and He let everyone know it. However no one seemed to like it when he showed off. He was bullied by mostly everyone in the school. Some were jealous of the talent he had, others were just following the crowd in fear of being disliked themselves.
As he walked through the door to his homeroom class he took a few moments to look around to his peers, trying to see if anyone would give him a sign that he was accepted by them... All he could see was dirty looks, all he heard was cruel statements in the form of whispers and laughter. He decided if he was going to make friends that he had to stand up for himself, so he tried to speak calmly “Listen I don’t know why you all have a problem with me, but I never did anything to any of you!” he prayed that they would listen to his reasoning
An older student got out of his desk almost as if he were offended by Dean's statement. “Hey! We don’t need any reason to hate you we just do!" The kid laughed to himself, then he continued to speak "Even if we had a reason what are you going to do about it!” as he got out of his seat he took a few steps closer to the boy Everyone started snickering and laughing this jerk was known as John, he often led kids in their attempts to push Dean over the edge, to get a rise out of him.
On most occasions Dean ignored them, but this was not one of those times “Oh don’t try fool me. It’s obvious you are all just mad because I made it here at an exceptional age and I’ll be getting out of here before most of you will be.” Dean tried to stand his ground but John pushed him into the chalk board...
“John! Leave Dean alone and take your seat!” the teacher came rushing in to interfere, he over heard most of the argument but hadn't seen a reason to intervene until now...
John started to laugh to himself as he spoke... “Maybe if Mr. Smarts here could learn to keep his mouth shut we wouldn't hate on him so much!” The rest of the class joined him in the laughter as the teacher turned a vivid red in the face...
“Well now you can take yourself to the principals office” He had enough of the constant bickering and was determined to move on with his lesson… “Dean please take your seat!”
Dean headed over to his seat only to get tripped, luckily he caught himself before he hit the floor... The day went on as it did in middle school. It continued with constant bullying, arguing and taunting.
When the day was over dean rode his bike to the outskirts of town. He had heard on the radio that a comet was due to crash near Mt. metropolis. Dean wanted to see it away from the city. The bright lights and not so bright people would just ruin the moment for him…
As he made his way up to the peak of the mountain he saw someone he never thought he'd meet, especially not up in the mountains.
Yet there he was, Clark Kent was sitting on a ledge right near his cabin, He was one of the more famous journalist of metropolis. Dean parked his bike next to his home and made his way towards the ledge trying not to startle the journalist.
Dean was a polite kid. He thought it would only be right to ask if he could stay... “umm excuse me, would you mind if I were to watch the comet from up here?" The reality of the situation was Dean was not going to leave this was his spot, he came here all the time to vent.
“I don’t know if it’s safe for someone your age to be up here.” Clark said as he motioned Dean away
“I’m sure I’ll be fine I come up here all the time." Dean reassured the journalist as he sat down next to him "My name’s Dean by the way” Dean had already decided, he was not going to leave just because some journalist wanted the big scoop even if he was famous…
“Do your parents even know you’re up here?” Clark questioned.
Dean thought to himself boy Clark you just played the wrong card he started to have tears come to his eyes, “well if they were still with me then yes they would know! I used to come up here all the time with them.” Dean's eyes started to water...
Clark, being the nice person that he was fell for dean’s dirty trick. Yes dean’s parents were gone but that happened long ago. He had already done his mourning. “I’m sorry I didn't know! Yes you can stay up here as long as you like.” Clark apologized...“if you don’t mind me asking. Where do you live?” he asked; trying to change the subject as quickly as possible.
Dean started to wipe the tears from his eyes. He began to set up his telescope... “Thanks. I live right up here actually. In the mountains, I have a cabin, it's right over there actually... During the day I go to school…”
“Oh, so that's your cabin, you said you go to School, what grade?”
“As of today I’m a freshman in high school.” Dean explained
Clark looked at Dean very surprised, at first he didn't believe him “high school? You look like you're only eight years old!”
“I’m ten and I take school very seriously, it's all i really have! Still, I really don’t know why I do though; everyone hates me there…”dean started to tear up again...
Clark patted dean on the shoulder, trying to be comforting he gave dean some words of advice... “don’t give up, things will get better.”
The comet that they both were waiting for started to come within their sights “Whoa it’s huge!” Dean gazed through his telescope in awe, he glanced over at Clark who was just watching as well, “Shouldn’t you be getting a camera out or something?” dean casually asked.
“I’m not always working you know I do have hobbies too.” Clark laughed
“oh I’m sorry I just thought that, wait a second." Dean paused as he examined the comet coming closer, "It doesn't look like it’s gaining momentum it actually looks like it’s slowing down…” Dean thought himself to be crazy at first, but he was right the comet was slowing down and the massive flame that surrounded the comet was dimming “now don’t call me crazy but that looks like a ship…” dean continued to look curiously
“It can’t be.” Clark said as he started to look through Dean's telescope
“I see where it’s going to land!!” dean yelled. Without warning he jumped on his mountain bike, he sped straight past Clark and rather then going down the trail, he decided to take the faster route... Straight down the mountain.
“ ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?!?” Clark yelled as he saw dean going down the peak with rapid speed
“Just maybe…” dean responded softly to himself, he peddled his bike as fast as he could without looking back. He went so fast that he hit a rock and tumbled to the bottom! He looked over to his bike which was in pieces "Aw man My bike is wrecked!"
He then looked up and saw Clark, standing there waiting for him. Dean was so surprised he got to his feet, though still in serious pain. "How did you?" At that moment dean looked past Clark to realize that he wasn't seeing things "Oh my god! I was right, it is a ship!” Dean stared in awe for moments. He took a few steps closer and the door to the space ship opened a dense fog covered the area from the ship. Clark put himself between dean and the ship and took a few steps back pushing dean with him
There was something at the door; something moving. It glanced at Clark, then stared to Dean through the fog. all that could be seen was it's glowing red eyes. Dean moved past Clark and took a few steps closer and the creature started to growl. Dean was still intrigued by it so he took a few more steps closer... Then it started to howl, a howl so earsplitting it echoed throughout the mountain! “Get out of here!” Clark yelled. Though dean acted as if he couldn't hear, Clark commanded once more "I said leave now!"
“yeah right I’m not scared!” Dean yelled back covering his ears from the howl. Then Dean stupidly ran towards the ship. The howl was cut short, it was replaced with an even louder growl... The creature attacked with very little warning. It jumped out of the ship with amazing speed! The creature was so fast that Dean didn't see where it went. Before he could figure out what had happened Dean was on the ground and his neck was in the creature’s mouth! Dean examined the alien that held him down, it seemed to be a dog of some sort.
“Dean… stay calm and DON’T move!” the dog like creature just glared back at Clark it seemed to be waiting, for an order of some sort
“Oh crud, please don’t kill me!” Dean pleaded as he tried not to struggle. The creature ignored his pleads and just started growling again…
“Dean Stay quiet and you might make it out of this!" I’m going to let you in on a little secret… but you can’t tell anyone!” Dean wanted to nod his head but he was too afraid to. “KRYPTO… HEEL!” the dog came running to Clark’s side; though still keeping a close eye on dean
Dean lay there on the ground, trying to catch his breath was amazed, he started to slowly put the pieces together and once he caught enough air to speak he managed to stutter out a few words... “Are you trying... Are you trying to tell me that you’re superman... and that’s… super dog?!?”
Clark laughed to himself “ I didn't say that... but you might be right… his name’s krypto.”
the dog started barking at Clark “oh I see of course…” Clark responded... Dean started to get up extremely slowly but the moment he moved Krypto snapped his head at dean and growled, not as loud as before but enough to scare Dean back down to the ground…
“So wait, you can understand it?” Dean couldn't believe what was happening he still lie there on the ground...
Krypto started towards dean menacingly...
Clark put his hand on krypto's shoulder “Krypto… its okay boy he’s with me.”
“Is it okay for me to get up now?” Clark and Krypto looked at dean then at each other and started laughing. Clark reached into the ship and pulled out what seemed to be a headphone of some sort… Clark headed over to dean and helped him up…
“Here this might help you understand what just happened a little bit better…” dean put the headphone in his ear and it attached itself in very tightly…it started to mold to dean’s ear, so tight that he couldn’t detach it, it was like a part of him… Krypto started barking again… but this time it actually was an understandable language to Dean…
“I saw you running past my friend and I thought you were going to hurt him… so instinctively I attacked, I’m really sorry about this whole mess…” Krypto said very sincerely
Dean was still astonished he could understand the canine “It’s fine… actually I think that has got to be one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me…I mean besides the almost being dog chow. I got to meet superman AND his dog to!”
Krypto started wagging his tail as he licked Dean on the cheek affectionately
“Alright well just remember you can’t tell anyone who I really am… I know you don’t have a family but…” Superman reminded dean
“No one at school is worth telling, they wouldn't believe me anyway... so don’t worry your secret is safe with me…” dean interrupted…
Krypto and Clark looked at each other… Then looked back to Dean“We want to trust you but we think to be on the safe side you should come with us for a little while…”
Dean was afraid, they were both coming towards him and he went to argue "but... but..."
“or you could become Krypto’s new chew toy…” Clark explained as Krypto looked at dean deviously
“Ok, alright I’ll go!” dean obviously was still terrified, who would want to try to argue with the man of steel especially not when he has his dog of steel with him...
Krypto started to laugh… Clark ripped off a piece of his shirt and wrapped it around dean’s eyes… “Krypto he’s flying with you…”
“You sure he can hold on tight enough?!” krypto smirked
“Don’t go too fast Krypto I think this will be his first time flying…”
Krypto laughed, he leaned over to help dean get on “Now hold on tight…!”
