Things Are Never As They Seem

Things Are Never As They Seem

This is a short story the evolved through a conversation with a dear friend of mine, and here I shall post it for you all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was once a little mouse who wandered into some large woods.

She had been told it was dangerous there, yet she disobeyed and decided to explore anyway.

She traveled deeper and deeper, not keeping track of her path.

Soon she realized she didnt know the way back, and the evening was growing dark.

The wind started to pick up and blew around her, sending a chill into her bones.

She ran in every direction yet to no avail, she only succeeded in becoming more lost and bewildered.

Soon the forest was pitch black and she could barely see her own paws in front of her face.

She leaned up against a tree shivering in fear and from the cold night.

Then there came a rustling noise and a thump was heard a little distance to her right.

"Who's there?" she called out with a trembling voice.

A soft and velvety voice answered her, "tis only I, a fellow traveler, are you scared little one?"

She gulped but didnt want to show her fear, "no... only very lost"

"Then come to me and I will help you find the way out," the voice crooned gently.

She squinted her eyes toward the voice yet saw nothing for it was too dark, "I can't see you..." she said, "can you show yourself?"

The voice chuckled softly, "do you not trust me? I am willing to help you and yet you question me? Perhaps I shall leave you here... see how you'll fare then."

The mouse stepped forward frantically not wanting to be left in the dark, "No! I'll come with you!"

"Well then come along and we shall soon be rid of this retched place, do not fear," the soft voice beckoned.

The mouse felt that the voice must not be dangerous since it was so soft and kind, so she quickly stepped towards it, hoping to leave at once.

As she approached a pair of golden eyes shone down on her, sparkling dangerously and hungrily.

Then a ray of soft moonlight shone down and illuminated the owner of the gentle voice.

She froze in her tracks and looked up with wide eyed fear as a giant owl materialized in front of her due to the moonlight.

The owl grinned down at her viciously, "Stupid Fool! you have just walked willingly into your demise!"

He lunged at her with his beak opened wide.

The mouse screamed and her world plunged painfully into an eternal pit of darkness.
