Chapter 10


It had been two days since Po’s defeat of Tai Lung. At the moment, Po and Tigress were sitting together under the Sacred Peach Tree of Heavenly Wisdom. They were both completely content. In his mind, Po was focusing on his love for Tigress. Thinking of what his father had said to him, he decided to take a next big step: asking Tigress to be his wife. He looked at her.

“Tigress, can I ask you something?” he began.

“What?” Tigress asked.

“Will you marry me?” Po answered.

Tigress was shocked and happy at the same time.

“Yes, Po, I will,” she replied.

Po could barely contain his excitement.

“Oh this is so totally awesome! I’m going to be Shifu’s son-in-law!” he exclaimed.

Tigress chuckled and then looked Po in the eyes.

“We should probably announce this to my dad. It would be rude not to get his permission first,” she said.

Po nodded.

“Then let’s go!” he said as he headed back towards the Jade Palace.

They walked back. At the entrance, they were met by Shifu.

“You two seem very happy,” the Red panda said.

Po smiled and began to nod excitedly.

“Shifu, I asked Tigress to marry me and she said yes!” he exclaimed.

Shifu looked to his daughter.

“Tigress, is this what you really want?” he asked.

“Yes, Dad. I remembered what you said and accepted his proposal,” Tigress replied.

Shifu nodded.

“Then I give you two my blessing. We must start preparing for the event. There is much to do,” he said.

Po and Tigress followed. The preparations began. Soon enough, everyone, including Mr. Ping and the other Kung Fu warriors, knew of the impending marriage. One evening, Po was in his room, trying to think of an appropriate gift for Tigress. Being that the door was open, Viper used the opportunity to slither in.

“So, any luck thinking of a gift?” she began.

“No,” Po replied.

Viper thought for a moment.

“How about love poetry?” the snake replied.

“I’m no poet,” Po told her.

“I’ll guide you,” Viper said.

Po was encouraged. He got out a scroll, and, under Viper’s guidance, wrote down a beautiful poem. When Tigress was out of her room, Po left the poem there with a note. When Tigress returned, she found the scroll and read it:


Oh my feline beloved

How beautiful you are!

Your fur is like a blazing fire

Your stripes are the strokes of an artist's brush

Your tail is like a beautiful ribbon

Strength and majesty abounds in your paws

Your eyes gleam with a ferocious beauty

You are altogether lovely

Your mere appearance leaves me breathless

Many men sought to win your heart

However, you reserved it for only one

He was I, the Dragon Warrior

I take great delight in you

You are the crown jewel of China

Beautiful beyond words

No one can compare to you

You are like the lotus that grows in the pond

Most of all, you are mine

She loved each and every word. She was inspired wrote a love poem of her own. When she was done, Po read it:

My beloved is the Dragon Warrior

His love is for me and me alone

Oh how strong are your paws, the ones that saved me from the grasp of Tai Lung

Your eyes are as emeralds

I admire the black and white of your fur

Your black is like the deepest, darkest night

Your white is like milk

Your arms are strong yet gentle

Your mouth speaks sweetness

You have been my friend since our cubhood

I cannot take my eyes off of you

Your presence is like the first rays of sunlight after a rainstorm

You are to me like the water that nourishes the lotus

Indeed, there were many other men who sought me

But I rejected them all for you

Truly, you are the greatest fighter in all China

I can remember the day we fell for each other

No man in the village can begin to compare to you

You have made me the happiest woman alive

Together, we shall share eternal joy

Though the years will pass

Though our strength shall diminish as we age

I will always love you

I proclaim my love for you

You and I

Together forever


Po loved it. Soon, it was time for the wedding. It was a huge event, with nearly everyone in the village attending. Po wore handsome robes of gold, while Tigress wore a red silk gown with gold embroidery and a jade necklace. It was a beautiful ceremony, where everyone ate, drank, danced and had fun. A year later, Po was having lunch with Mr. Ping, when Tigress arrived on the scene. She wore a green robe over her regular clothes, which was unusual for her.

“Po, I have something to tell you,” she said proudly.

“What?” Po asked.

Tigress smiled and opened her robe. Po noticed that her belly had begun to distend.

“Po, I’m pregnant,” she replied.

Po was overjoyed. He rose and embraced his wife.

“That’s wonderful!” he stated.

Mr. Ping was excited too.

“Happy day! I am to be a grandfather!” he announced as he hugged his daughter-in-law.

When everyone else found out, they were very excited to see what Po and Tigress’ child would come out like. A bit of time had passed since Tigress announced her pregnancy to Po. Now, her belly was bulging and her condition was obvious to all. For the moment, she wasn’t the lithe-bodied beauty that everyone usually saw. For a long moment, she thought about everything that was happening: the discomfort, the sickness and so on. She sat down on the bed and placed her paws on her belly. It was then that she began to think of the coming joy:


My cub

The child of the Dragon Warrior

Boy or girl

We shall love you the same

From us, you shall learn

Bravery and loyalty

Humility and honesty

However

Your name will surely be great


Tigress rested for some time, trying to keep off her feet. Before long, Po returned from a small walk he had gone on. He knocked on the door of their chamber. Tigress growled irritably as got to her aching feet. She opened the door. It was at that moment that the panda handed her a lotus blossom that he had picked for her.

“A pretty flower for a pretty kitty,” he said with a flirtatious wink.

Tigress accepted the flower.

“It’s wonderful to see that you still find me pretty even in this condition,” she said sarcastically as she put the lotus in a vase.

Po sighed.

“Come on, babe, I’ve always found you attractive. You know that,” he said.

Tigress turned.

“In the past, I didn’t look like I was swollen to the point of bursting,” she said.

Po held Tigress close.

“Look, you are the love of my life. Now, get off your feet. You need to rest,” he told her.

Tigress frowned at how overprotective Po had been over her lately.

“Po, I’m fine. You’re acting like I have some sort of life-threatening disease,” she said.

Po smiled.

“How’s the baby?” he asked.

“It’s fine,” she said.

“And you?” Po continued.

“I’m miserable, achy and uncomfortable, but other than that, I’m fine,” Tigress replied with a slight smile.

She then proceeded to sit down on a comfortable chair in the room. Po put his hand on her belly.

“Hello, little one,” he said in a cutesy tone.

Tigress laughed.

“It’s a whole new world for us,” she said.

Po smiled.

“Indeed,” he said.

The panda then leaned in and kissed his beloved wife. It was a beautiful moment, and, very soon, they would have a family to share even more moments with. However, nothing could prepare them for the shock they would get when the cub was born. Finally, the months passed and it was time for the birth to happen. Shifu called the village’s goose doctor, Li Bing, and his rabbit assistant, Jing-Li, to aid his daughter. Po spent a long period of time outside the room, feeling nervous. However, it all went away when Li Bing called him in, saying that there were two healthy twin girls, and that there was another surprise. The Dragon Warrior rushed in and looked upon his two daughters for the first time. Both were very beautiful. One was a white tigress with blue eyes, while the other was a panda with brown eyes. The white tigress was named Mei-Lin, meaning ‘beautiful gem’, while the panda was named Huan Ning, meaning ‘Joyous tranquility’. Po and Tigress could scarcely be happier.
