Sauriana (PG13 Star Fox/Dinotopia mix oneshot)

Ok, I admit, I'm fascinated by royal history, whether that be Ancient middle eastern royalty, European royalty or any other type of royalty. I'm also a fan of Nintendo's video game series "Star Fox" and author and artist James Gurney's book series "Dinotopia". To that end, I have blended the two series together with some of my own ideas to make this. In this tale, the term "Anthro" is used in the same way as the term "Human". No bashing or flaming of any sort, please.

Sauriana

Far away, hidden from the rest of the world, a vast and mysterious island was located. It was an amazing place, known to the multitude of anthros who inhabited it as Sauriana. They called it by this name because the island was also inhabited by all manner of dinosaurs. Long ago, when the first anthros arrived on the island, they discovered how to domesticate some of the great reptiles, primarily the herbivores and the small carnivore called Troodon, as well as the swift, two-legged ostrich-like dinosaurs like Gallimimus. The other carnivores, such as Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor, were too uncontrollable to be domesticated and continued to live in the vast jungles and forests. The dinosaurs that had been domesticated lived among the anthros, serving as riding animals, meat animals, draft animals and so on. Over many centuries, the anthros had gone from a small collection of villages into a great civilization, one on par with ancient Egypt, ancient Persia or ancient Rome. Their vast wealth came from the gold, silver and precious gems that came from the mountains. Right now, in the island’s capital city of Dinopolis, in the royal palace, the king and queen, a married pair of foxes named James and Vixy McCloud, looked out the window upon the city from which they ruled. They watched as various anthros went about their business.

“We’ve had peace for so long,” James said to his beautiful wife.

“Indeed,” Queen Vixy replied.

“I wonder what my ex-warmaster’s been up to since his exile,” James mused.

Vixy knew what he was talking about. Several years ago, the warmaster, a Grey wolf named Wolf O’Donnell, had desired to take the throne of Sauriana from James. One night, aided by his wife, the beautiful white-furred, blonde-haired, blue-eyed arctic wolf named Rana, had crept into James and Vixy’s bedchamber in order to assassinate them. However, they failed and were captured by the guards and imprisoned. James then met with his advisers, including Grand vizier Peppy Hare and Chief Scribe Beltino Toad, and the decision was made to exile Wolf and Rana to the jungles. They had been given some supplies and sent out. Along the way, they met the chameleon thief and murderer Leon Powalski and his band of rogue apes. They made camp in the jungles, and hadn’t been heard from since. Vixy looked at James.

“Probably, one of the carnivores got to them,” she said.

“True. I’m sure we would’ve heard something from them by now if they were alive,” James replied.

“Heard from who?” a voice asked.

James and Vixy turned to see their handsome son and crown prince, Fox, standing there.

“Where have you been?” Vixy asked.

“Racing Gallimimus with the others,” Fox answered.

Just then, a chirpy feminine voice was heard.

“It was great! Slippy fell off his mount before he even got past the start line!” it exclaimed.

James and Vixy looked to see a pretty young female poodle. Her name was Fay, and she was their adopted daughter. She had been born into a poor family who wished to give her a better life. As a baby, she had been placed in a basket and put on the step of the royal palace. Vixy found her, and, after showing her to James and four-year old Fox, who loved her upon seeing her, she became part of the McCloud family. After a small laugh at his daughter’s statement, James returned to Fox’s original question.

“We were discussing the fate of Wolf O’Donnell,” the king said.

“It’s been so long. The Tyrannosaurs probably got him,” Fay stated.

“Perhaps, but perhaps not,” Vixy replied.

Fay sighed, and then looked at her beloved big brother.

“So, what are you going to do?” she asked.

“I told Krystal that I would relax with her in the garden,” Fox answered.

Fay smiled. Krystal, her best friend, was a gorgeous blue vixen whom Fox was betrothed to and would soon marry.

“Well, have fun,” the poodle said.

Fox nodded and headed off. Upon reaching the garden, he met his beloved Krystal. The blue vixen was the daughter of the current warmaster, a male blue fox named Soren. Her mother was named Lila. Krystal’s gem-like eyes looked at Fox.

“Hello,” she said.

“Hello,” Fox answered.

He went over and sat down next to her. From an upstairs window, Fay watched. Suddenly, she was approached by her and Fox’s other friends: A female Fennec fox named Fara Phoenix, a female lynx named Miyu, a pink-furred female housecat named Katt Monroe, a blue male falcon named Falco Lombardi, a pink-furred female rabbit named Lucy Hare and the green frog named Slippy Toad. All of them were children of palace employees. Lucy was the daughter of Peppy, Falco the son of James’ cupbearer, Miyu the daughter of the palace goldsmith, Fara the daughter of the king’s armor maker, Katt the daughter of the palace's chief dinosaur handler and Slippy the son of Beltino. Fara was the first to speak.

“Princess, what are you doing?” the Fennec asked.

Fay turned around.

“Watching my brother and Krystal,” she replied.

“You should know to respect their privacy,” Fara answered.

“But their flirting is so cute,” Fay said.

Fara took a look outside.

“Whatever. Anyway, I had fun racing today,” she continued.

“The best part was when Slippy fell,” Falco said.

“I’ve never seen anyone make a more spectacular fall,” Miyu added.

“You two are meanies!” Slippy protested in his annoying high voice.

“Come on, Slippy. You provide a great service to this group,” Lucy told him.

The frog looked up excitedly.

“What?” he asked.

“You provide us with laughter,” the rabbit answered.

Slippy pouted.

“My dad is the chief scribe,” he stated.

“Who cares?” Falco asked.

“I do,” Slippy said.

Time passed, and Fox and Krystal returned. Soon, it would be time for dinner. As the meal was being cooked, Fay went to Fox. She had been thinking about what James had been saying, and was wondering if it was possible if Wolf could still be alive. She arrived in her brother’s room.

“Fox?” she began.

Fox looked up.

“Yes?” he asked.

“Do you think that it’s possible that Wolf is still alive?” the poodle asked.

“Probably not,” Fox answered.

“I know what the court says. The Tyrannosaurs likely got to him,” Fay continued.

“Yeah. I guess we’ll never know,” Fox replied.

Little did they know, however, that Wolf and his wife Rana were alive and well. They had managed to escape the jungle’s predators and form a small village. For years now, Wolf had been making his revenge plan. He just needed a plan to lure James into action against him. Rana approached him.

“Why don’t you kidnap a child of his?” the white wolf suggested.

“But which one?” Wolf asked.

“Either one will do. He loves them equally,” Rana replied.

Wolf thought and debated to himself. He then came up with the answer. He smiled viciously.

“We will take Princess Fay,” he said.

“Very good, beloved husband,” Rana said, her tone equally vicious.

Wolf stood and embraced her.

“I will send Leon to take her,” he stated.

They then shared a kiss. Days went by, and Leon arrived in Dinopolis. His instructions were to spy on Fay and learn her habits. Through this, he learned that she sometimes took walks through the city market. When she had her back turned and her bodyguard had gone to another stall to fetch a drink, the chameleon struck. The poodle screamed, and her guard came running. Leon glared at him.

“Tell the king that his daughter has been taken by Wolf O’Donnell. If he wants to see her again, he’ll have to fight for her,” the lizard said.

And with that, he fled with her to the jungles. Fay soon found herself looking upon Wolf.

“Welcome to the jungle, Princess,” he began.

“Why did you kidnap me?!” Fay demanded.

“It was the only way to bring your father out for a final confrontation,” Wolf replied.

“You want to attack my father?” Fay asked.

“Yes. His death will allow me to seize the throne of Sauriana,” Wolf said.

Fay glared in anger.

“You know, my father is probably on the way here for me. He’ll have his whole army with him, and you’ll be sorry that you dared to even touch me,” she stated.

Wolf chuckled.

“Dear girl, you will find that you are mistaken, about a great many things,” he told her.

“We’ll see,” Fay retorted.

“Yes, we will,” Wolf told her.

He then turned and left. Meanwhile, back in Dinopolis, James had been informed of what had happened. Upon hearing of the incident, he called together his entire army to go and retrieve his daughter. The men, well prepared for battle, rode upon the backs of large powerful herbivores: Triceratops, Ankylosaurs and others. Fox and James, wearing gleaming battle armor, each rode a Triceratops. They were at the head of the group. As they entered the jungle, all of them were on alert. They knew full well the threat of the Tyrannosaurs, Allosaurs, Velociraptors and other predators. Fox looked around.

“I wonder where Wolf is hiding,” the prince said.

“I don’t know. Keep an eye for any sign of a camp or hideout,” James replied.

The trek continued. Finally, Fox spotted a camp. It was the camp where Wolf stayed.

“There’s a camp!” Fox exclaimed.

“You have good eyes. Now, men, let’s investigate,” James said.

The army turned in the direction of the camp. It was just then that Rana exited her and Wolf’s dwelling. She felt intimidated as James approached her, his sword gleaming.

“Where is my daughter?” he demanded.

Rana glared.

“Oh, she’s here somewhere. I’m not saying where though,” the wolf replied.

They then heard a slight sigh of frustration from the dwelling Rana had come from. James recognized it as his daughter. He went over and entered. Fay, whose arms and legs were bound with rope, became excited as her father, the great king, came over to her.

“Daddy!” she said happily.

“Did they hurt you?” James asked.

“No, but they did mock the McCloud family, and me,” Fay answered.

James used his sword to cut her bonds. When she was free, the poodle hugged her father tightly.

“Come now. We will return to Dinopolis,” he said.

They exited, only to come face-to-face with Wolf. Though surrounded by Fox and the soldiers and their dinosaur mounts, Wolf seemed calm. However, inside, he was a bit intimidated. He knew how powerful this ruler was. James was a king of legendary status. He was famous for single-handedly killing a full-grown Tyrannosaur that had attacked a village by tripping it with logs and stabbing it in the neck with his sword.

“King James. I see that my little plan succeeded,” Wolf began.

‘‘No, you caused my daughter torment!” James shouted.

Wolf turned to see Fay holding onto her father tightly. She seemed scared, and Wolf relished every moment of it.

“You really think I care about your daughter? I accomplished my goal of drawing you out,” he answered.

James was enraged.

“As of today, we are at war,” he stated.

And with that, he left. Wolf looked at Rana.

“We have no army,” she said.

Wolf thought for a moment.

“I know. We’ll take citizens from the towns and force them to fight for us,” he said.

“Excellent,” Rana replied.

And so, they got their band of thieves together and went to carry out this plan. At this same time, James and his army arrived back in Dinopolis, where they returned to the palace. Fay got off James’ Triceratops and ran into the arms of a waiting Vixy.

“Mom! I’m so glad to see you!” she announced.

Vixy hugged her tightly. It was then that Krystal arrived on the scene.

“Fay, are you ok?” she asked.

“She’s fine, just a bit shaken up,” James said.

Fox came soon after.

“Wolf had her bound,” he added.

“Well, you’re home now, sweetie. Let’s go and rest,” Vixy said to Fay.

“Your highness, I wish you well,” Krystal continued.

As Fay began her recovery, James began to prepare for his war against Wolf. It was then that news of the former warmaster’s pillaging and enslaving came to his ears. He then knew that it was time to move out. The day Fox and James were to leave, they said goodbye to their loved ones. James first looked at Vixy.

“I will return, my love. Take care of things here,” he said.

“I will,” the vixen replied.

Fox said goodbye to his mother and sister, and then to Krystal, who wished her soon-to-be husband well. He then went to his father and they were off. After pitching camp in the location known as the Hadro Plains, the first battle of the war occurred. James won, in no small part due to Wolf’s band of unwilling, fearful citizens who wouldn’t fight against their king. In a rage, Wolf executed a few, and then sent the rest home. He would now use just his band of thieves. However, the band was only medium size and would be defeated. Over the next few weeks, more battles occurred, with James winning victory after victory. The band of thieves was reduced even further in number. The final battle was at hand. From the heads of their groups, Wolf and James stared each other down.

“You will no longer be a threat to Sauriana,” James began.

“Once I kill you, I will use your army for my own purposes,” Wolf answered.

James didn’t waste any time. He, Fox and Soren charged with the army into the battle. James and Wolf engaged each other in sword combat.

“Your evil will be gone from the island,” James stated.

“Not if I destroy you first!” Wolf retorted.

The fight continued. However, the army of the king had the upper hand, and Leon and the apes were slain, along with Rana. Wolf then tried to rush at James, but was impaled on the fox’s blade.

“I wanted to be king,” he said weakly.

“But now you die a traitor,” James replied.

James then proceeded to pull the blade out, killing Wolf. He fell to the ground, dead. James looked at Fox, Soren and the army.

“We are victorious!” he shouted.

They then broke camp and returned to Dinopolis. When a sent-ahead messenger informed them that the army was returning in triumph, Vixy, Fay and Krystal were very excited.

“They did it!” Fay said.

“Yes, and now, it’s time for another big step,” Vixy added.

“What is that?” Krystal asked.

“You and Fox’s marriage,” the queen answered.

Though she didn’t immediately say it, Krystal was excited. When Fox returned, she hugged him tightly.

“Oh my love, you’ve returned safely,” she said.

Fox returned the hug. He also hugged his mother and sister. At dinner that night, Fox was told that he would soon marry Krystal. He couldn’t have been happier. Three days later, there was a celebration like Dinopolis had never seen. The day events consisted of a victory celebration. James and Vixy rode atop the back of a massive, long-necked Apatosaurus, while Fox, Fay and Krystal rode alongside on their Gallimimus. At night, the marriage of Fox and Krystal occurred. As she sat in her seat, Miyu heard crying from next to her. She looked over to see Slippy weeping.

“What is it now?” she asked.

“I always cry at weddings,” Slippy answered.

Miyu sighed in disgust. After the wedding, there was a vast feast. Altogether, it was a wonderful night. Fox and Krystal were very happy.
