Survival of the fittest - AmyMarie and Shadowfax

Sam was taken aback when Aimee bid him a goodnight. It was something he wasn't used to, but he appreciated it all the same.

"Goodnight everyone" Sam said, resting his head up against the window.

Ashelin rolled her eyes at all these biddings of goodnight. She looked out the window and away into the night before looking back down at her wrist. The blood hadn't run at all since this new bandage had been applied and she was grateful for that. Her eyes rested on George for a moment, then over her shoulder at Sam and Aimee. They don't trust me.. They are learning She thought, somewhat satisfied.

An hour passed and Ashelin was still wide awake. The wind got up and blew Sam's blanket across the road and all the memories of being ill with the virus suddenly came back to her. She held her hands up to her face and could see them still trembling them. The virus was gone, but it had left her body frail and weak. Before Ashelin could stop herself she burst into silent tears. She just prayed nobody was awake to see her breaking down like this. It was as if the shock had only just got to her.

(Bed time for me :C I'll be online from about 7.30 again tomorrow =3)

(Alright, nighty night! I'm off too, I'll edit my reply into this post in the morning :3)

George stirred, having turned in his sleep and found himself in an awkward position, he opened his weary eyes. He stretched and rubbed the back of his neck, grumbling under his breath. He was about to close his eyes again when he glanced to his side.

Ashelin was crying. She wasn't making any sound, but he could see the tears.
"Uh...are you ok?" he asked quietly, to not wake the other two. He had a hint of concern in his voice, and with his hand still rubbing his neck he looked at her, awaited a reply. George wondered if he could do anything to comfort her, but she'd probably lash out if he tried.

"Its just the after effects of the virus' She said quickly.

Ashelin had been caught out and she felt incredibly awkward. She gulped and hastilly wiped the tears away with the sleeve of her hoodie. It must have been atleast 4am and from what she could tell the other two were fast asleep. She avoided eye contact with George for a moment. She had already shown weakness Infront of him on two occasions now and she didn't intend for it to happen again.

"You should get some sleep. We will need to get some more supplies tomorrow" Ashelin said with a sigh.

George sighed back, she was stubborn, and she couldn't accept the fact things had gotten to her. He didn't judge those who cried, he helped them. George put his feet back up on the bonnet and smiled softly at Ashelin with sleepy, but happy eyes.
"We'll find a service station. I bet Aimee'll want to clean up somehow, and we all need to use a proper toilet" he withheld a laugh. "But yeah, supplies..." George would of talked more, but a yawn interrupted him.
"Wake me if the pain gets worse in your arm, or if you want...need to talk". Closing his eyes, he drifted back off too sleep.

A few hours later, George found himself awake again. He checked the time, 8am. The four hours extra he got paid off. Glancing around to the back of the car, he already saw Aimee beginning to stir. He reached down to his pack and extracted a bottle of water from the front pouch, opening the lid, he took a few grateful gulps.

Ashelin said nothing as George told her that he would not mind if she woke him to talk. Deep down she felt ever so grateful for that notion, but at the same time with her being her, she could not admit that. Instead, she remained silent and watched George until he fell asleep.

For the next few hours, true to her word she kept watch. She had 'slept' or 'died' or whatever it was that had happened to her for hours before so she did not feel sleepy at all. Infact when the sun came up, she felt wide awake and ready. Her arm had not given her any grief for the last few hours and there were only a few patches of blood on the bandages when she looked down at it for the first time. It was about 7AM then.

When George woke she watched him for a moment, but looked away after a while. Sam was still fast asleep in the back, occasionally twitching and flicking his finger as if shoeing away a bug. Aimee too was starting to stir so she knew they'd all be awake soon. Ashelin heaved a sigh and looked out at the horizon. She was not going to let herself be stabbed or made to look weak today.

"Morning" George said to Ashelin with a light-hearted ring to his voice. Despite being generally pessimistic normally, Aimee's hoping and look on life was beginning to wear off on George. He felt today would be a good day, and he enjoyed his brief feeling of optimism. His little sister let out a huge yawn and opened her eyes. They flickered for a moment and then she rolled over to look out of the window. It was sunny, and not too cold. Just how she liked the weather really.

"What's the plan for today?" she asked tiredly.
"Well, we'll look for a service station and gather some supplies and move on I guess" Aimee listened and after a few seconds to process it, she nodded.

"Before we go into anywhere though.. We'll need to asses it. Alot of gangs, like those ba****s back there are using shopping centers as hideouts. It appears like their new homes are getting over crowded and they are moving to the smaller shops and service stations. We'll go in, stock up and find a nice country house to sleep in for the night. As nice as sleeping in a car is, I don't want to make it a habit. And people arn't settling in houses at the moment. It'll be safer in a secluded house than a shop" Ashelin said clicking the bottom of the hand gun into place.

As the gun clicked Sam awoke and felt himself shudder at the sound. He'd been dreaming of the events the night before and it was all still fresh in his mind. He saw the sun was shining and his friends were around him soon enough though and relaxed when he saw them.

"Im hungry" He grumbled sleepily.

"Yeah, I know" George said. He wasn't completely clueless, he had been on the run from a gang for the past week. He actually wondered where they had gone off too, the men that attacked them last night weren't part of the same gang, he was sure of that.
"An abandoned house sounds good enough, I know my way around these parts. If we head over to Newport we'll past some pretty secluded spots".

Aimee had been listening intently. She didn't care where she went, as long as she was with George. She sighed, but grinned when she noticed Sam was awake. She chuckled and reached into her back, handing him a breakfast bar.
"There you go".

Sam took the bar gratefully and began to eat. He felt so hungry this morning, but that was probably down to the fact it was rather cold last night and his body was telling him to eat to keep warm. The boy looked into his own backpack and saw all his food supplies were gone. Ashelin read his mind before he opened his mouth.

"We'll get more food today. Just be quiet and eat" She said with a sigh before turning back to George.

"Good, I don't know this area at all. Just steer clear of the cities and large towns. I can't be dealing with any gangs anytime soon"

Aimee gave a little 'humph' when Ashelin spoke to Sam in a tone she disliked. She rolled down her window and breathed in some fresh air, it soothed her a little. Being out on the road was comforting in a way, no houses or streets crowded together.

At the mention of towns and cities, George sighed
"I wouldn't describe Newport as particularly large, but we'll only pass through. Can't be staying there for long. Visited once to see a Uni friend, quite a rough place". The friend he was talking about, Aaron his name was, was familar to Aimee, but she didn't know whether he was alive or not.

"We all don't want to be dealing with gangs" George stated, starting up the car again. He began to drive, picking up speed once he felt steady enough. "Me and Aimee have had enough of that back home" he added with a sigh. His sister shot him a look, he hadn't talked about their experiences to anyone else yet. It was something she wanted to forget.
