Kate had no idea how just grooming (and whatever else her mother had in store for her) could take up an entire day, but she wasn't too surprised when it did end up taking an entire day. Whenever she'd felt like her mother had finished, Eve would find something else she thought wasn't right or perfect. Fortunately enough, Lilly stayed with her throughout the whole "session" and provided her with mental support. Kate took the opportunity to let her sister know what was going on.

Unlike her, her Omega sister seemed to think that it wasn't such a bad idea, or maybe she was just trying to make Kate feel better because of Kate's apparent apprehension about the approaching evening. "There!" said her mother at some point, causing Kate's ears to perk up. Was it finally over? "All set!" Kate couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. "I can't wait to see what you look like under the moonlight!" After all, the den was quite dark. "Let me go see where your father is!"

Mooch, Salty and Shakey haven't seen Humphrey ever since the previous evening, and the closer the moonlight howl got the more curious they became about his whereabouts. Checking his den only occurred to them after searching for him in the usual spots they liked to hang out at, and when they did finally go to his den they were more than surprised to find the usually energetic Omega asleep. "Hey, Humphrey, wake up!" said Salty, shaking his friend's shoulders. "What's with you? You don't want to miss the moonlight howl, do you?"

Knowing just how picky Eve can be, Winston spend far more time than he wanted to picking out a flower for Kate - the entire day. He didn't mean to, but for some reason the flowers alluded him, and after hours of searching and he would find one, it won't hold up to Eve's standards. So finally, when the sun was already setting, he found one that Winston knew would pass the most vigorous of tests for shape and color that Eve might place it under. It seemed rather silly that his wife would care so much about such a trivial matter, but as an alpha, there were very few things that Eve didn't take seriously, and this wasn't one of them.

Proudly trotting back to the den with the flower, Winston arrived to see the rest of his family inside. Sure enough, Kate was very well groomed, while Eve looked rather annoyed at him. "Sorry hun," Winston quickly muttered to avoid Eve's wrath, "but the flowers were rather dull this time around. But I did find this one..." He presented the flower to Eve who after a rather lengthy examination period finally nodded and placed it behind Kate's ear. Winston let out a relieved sigh. "Alright, Kate. Ready to go and meet Garth?"

Humphrey let out a groan when he found himself being rudely awakened from his day-long nap. "What- miss what? Oh, the moonlight howl!" He blinked some more, waking himself up and seeing all three of his friends smiling eagerly at him. While he didn't feel like he had much hope for finding anyone to howl with, with Kate being busy and all, he just couldn't ignore his friends and leaving them to their own undeveloped skills at trying to find a girl. Not the way they were all eagerly looking at him.

So the omega broke into a wide smile. "Miss the moonlight howl? What? Of course not!" He looked over his friends, seeing how rough they kept their fur. Omegas. "You guys go and wash up, and I'll talk to the girls and make sure that they'll be ready as well." Upon hearing the word 'girls', his friends bolted off to the nearest stream, leaving Humphrey alone in his den again. The thought of going back to sleep crossed his mind, but as Humphrey let out one last long yawn, he knew that as the lead omega, he had a job to do. Contrary to the non-omega pack population's beliefs that omegas don't know anything about work, Humphrey treated his status as lead omega with respect and dignity.

With a longing look at the ground where he just slept, the wolf exited his den and went off to prepare the omega girls for the moonlight howl.

Kate honestly didn't know what was worse; spending the entire day sitting still while her mother groomed her or spending the entire day looking for a flower that her mother would consider to be good enough. Yes, winter was already over, but since spring has only recently started it could be quite difficult to find a flower that has fully sprouted. Her father sure was lucky that the flower he had just brought in passed her mother's tests because the moonlight howl was about to start very soon.

Taking in a deep breath, Kate nodded and looked at her father with a smile. "I'm ready." As the four of them slowly walked outside of the den she whispered to her sister, "Hey, uh, do you think you could maybe come with me if you don't have anything planned for the evening?" she asked. If there was anybody who could make it all less awkward it was Lilly. Besides, it seemed more than appropriate for Lilly to also meet Garth (with him being her future brother-in-law). The white Omega gave a silent nod of approval, causing Kate to smile. "Thanks..."

"Oh, I simply knew you would look beautiful!" exclaimed Eve with delight as they emerged out of the den. "Now listen carefully, honey," she placed a paw on her daughter's shoulder, "if Garth gets out of line... Take those beautiful teeth of yours, go for the throat and don't let go until the body stops shaking."

Even though Winston knew that every now and then his wife could come up with some very strange and rather disturbed phrases and comments, he didn't expect it now, so he was left rather shocked after what she told Kate to do, just in case. Regaining his senses, he cleared his throat. "I'm sure you won't have to do that, Kate. Garth is going to be a great wolf that you will enjoy getting to know." He didn't know if it was true or not, but having Kate and Garth get along well was vital for pack security and stability. "Lilly, I don't think you'll mind taking Kate up to the howling rock," he turned and smiled at Eve. "Meanwhile, honey, I'll be the one escorting you there." He gave Eve a wink as Lilly and Kate left and he motioned to Eve to walk by his side.

Elsewhere in the pack, Humphrey had the girls tell him where they were planning to spend the night at the howling rock. Grinning to himself, he returned to his friends, who were still busy washing and cleaning themselves. To Humphrey, they looked like they were over doing it by a long shot. "Okay guys, come one and get out of the water! You don't want to miss the girls you are washing yourselves so much for!"

Together they walked up and Humphrey pointed out some bushes for his friends to hide behind. Even Mooch won't have any trouble staying out of sight. "Okay guys, stay behind those bushes while I get the girls... Uh, don't you all jump on them right away, or you'll most definitely be howling alone tonight. While you're waiting, think of how to approach them. Perhaps think of something witty to say. You know... like a pick-up line." He grinned. "See you all later!"

One would imagine that, having been raised and trained by her mother, Kate would have learned to see Eve's remarks coming now that she was a grown up. Regardless of that, Kate has never been able to predict them even once, and was always caught off guard by them. Heck, even her father was still unable to see them coming, and he's obviously known her mother far longer than she has. Besides, biting into Garth's throat would most likely start a war a million times faster than simply refusing to marry him would.

Deciding to just go before her mother said anything else that would disturb the living hell out of her, Kate silently nodded before taking her leave, accompanied by her sister. Now that she was thinking about it, this was going to be the first moonlight howl she attended as a grownup. Puppies don't really participate in howls. The last time she'd howled (for whatever reason she had to howl, she couldn't remember) was back when she was little. She didn't even know what her howling would sound like. What if she sounded terrible? She didn't even know how a moonlight howl actually went!

"So, uh, Lilly..." said Kate once she was sure she and her sister had gained some distance on their parents. Since Lilly hadn't attended Alpha School she must have been to at least one moonlight howl before. "I've never actually been to a moonlight howl, and..."

"Yes?" asked Lilly, looking at her sister.

"Well, you were here and not in Alpha School... Could you tell me what I'm supposed to do?"

Lilly silently looked at her for a few seconds, as if she was finding the question to be an odd one. "What do you mean?" she asked. "It's a moonlight howl. So, um... You howl."

"Yes, of course." Now that Kate was thinking about it, that really was a retarded question (although that's not what she'd meant by it). Since trying to get her sister to get her drift would be even more embarrassing, Kate decided to just leave it at that. "You know, it's okay if you were embarrassed to say anything in front of mom and dad." she said after a short silence. "If somebody's taking you to the moonlight howl then I won't keep you. You can head off, I'll be fine."

"Oh, that's fine." said Lilly with her usual, small smile. "I'm not going with anyone so I don't mind coming with you until you find Garth... Nobody wants to howl with me anyway..."

"What?" asked Kate, coming to a stop. "Don't be silly!" she then caught up to her sister, once again walking alongside her. "I'm sure there's at least one wolf in our pack that is dying to ask you to accompany him! He's probably just scared of mom!"

Lilly couldn't help but chuckle at her sister's joke. "Maybe..." While Kate really had said that in order to make her sister feel better by making her laugh, there was a pretty decent chance that another Omega liked Lilly but was too afraid of Eve's wrath in order to do anything about it.

I got a little carried away here (well, not really... I enjoyed every letter of that dialog) and was too lazy to write for Humphrey's friends so let's say they just magically teleported and are now behind the bushes... Feel free to bring Kate & Lilly over to where Humphrey and his friends are after his friends fail miserably. Then we can also bring Garth in.

Humphrey had watched his friends fail quite miserably at getting the attention of a couple of omega girls that walked bye. He felt a little like his efforts to get his friends a howling partner had gone to waste, after all, he had expected them to be better at talking to girls. Especially Salty's "Hey". Walking over to them, Humphrey felt like a little bit of gloating was in order. "When you shouted 'hey', why, I was sure they'd be all over you!"

Salty, already embarrassed at having only one pick up line, grunted. "Oh, and I suppose you think you can do better?"

Humphrey grinned. "Sure can! The next girl to walk up that ridge, she's mine!" Almost on cue, as he looked over, Kate and Lilly emerged, walking towards the howling rock. Especially with Kate freshly groomed, Humphrey's jaw dropped at the sigh of her. "Whoa..." Even his friends were stunned by the sight of her, allowing Humphrey the freedom to fantasize spending the night with her, and the two of them howling together. At least, until Humphrey tried to hug Kate and realized that he was instead about to hug Mooch. He chuckled nervously as he bake away. "I'll... I'll be right back!"

He tried to walk away, but was stopped by his friends. Mooch demanded to know where he was going, while Shaky reminded him yet again that it was forbidden for him to be with Kate. Humphrey just stared back, knowing he was caught. "Guys, I was just... kidding." He knew it was false, but pack laws were pack laws. Kate was destined for someone else.

Salty noticed Humphrey get a little depressed. "Hey, at least you still got us! Wolf pile!"

Before he can run, Humphrey found himself tackled by his friends, and to make it worse, they forgot that they were at the edge of the howling rock, because as he struggled out of the tackle to get some much needed air, Humphrey was launched from the wolf pile and into open air off the cliff. Luckily for him, a tree was in the way and he was saved by a thick branch that stopped his fall.

And right under the tree, walking towards him, were non other than Kate and Lilly, unaware of the wolf now dangling just over their heads.

Kate found herself becoming a little nervous as she and her sister finally got in sight of the howling rock. It seemed like the two of them were there just in time. Some wolves were just getting there, like they were, and some had already taken themselves a spot and had started howling, mostly in couples. She could immediately see that some of the wolves were not from her pack, meaning that they were Eastern wolves. After all, it would be a rather stupid idea to send Garth into the Western Pack's territory on his own, and since the night was meant for Kate to get to know him then it could allow the two packs to get to know each other as well.

"I see some of the Eastern wolves are already here..." said Lilly quietly as the two of them kept walking, completely oblivious to Humphrey and his predicament. "Can you see Garth?"

"Uh, I don't know..." said Kate, looking at her sister in the corner of her eye. It was possible that Garth hasn't even gotten there yet. "Or maybe I can. I'm not really sure what he looks like..." She once again scanned the howling rock, more carefully this time. "But I get the feeling that-" One wolf stood out from all the others, and he immediately caught her attention, "-I'll know him when I see him..." He appeared to be slightly larger than the average male wolf and the color of his fur was very close to his father's. Kate was no expert, but he was quite a looker.

It didn't take very long for Garth to take notice of the two of them. Kate took in a deep breath. Things would work out, she told herself. They had to.

Garth waited on top of one of the taller places at the howling rock where he can still have a great view of the surrounding lands. Even though he was now in western pack territory, his own eastern pack lands simply didn't have any land formations resembling the howling rock. Not to mention, momentarily he, along with Kate, will unite the packs and it won't matter anymore about in which pack's land something used to be, and will simply be part of a unified, peaceful pack. Some movement caught his eye and he spotted two female wolves making their way towards the rock, and from the looks of one, she had to be Kate.

"Hey, Kate!" Garth grinned and jumped down, walking towards the two wolves. His posture emitting a character full of confidence and pride. He wasn't too surprised when both Kate and the other wolf both almost froze in shock at his appearance. He had that effect when it mattered. "Dad told me all about you. How are you doing tonight?"

Before Kate could answer, something large and heavy fell between him and Kate, landing in a large dusty heap.

Humphrey was not impressed when an eastern wolf of all creatures called out and made his way towards Kate. He glared suspiciously at this newcomer from up on his branch. "What..?" Humphrey even had to admit that this red-furred wolf, clearly an alpha, stirred up feelings in him that can only be described as jealousy. Somehow, this eastern wolf already knew about Kate, making things seem rather suspicious. Before things got too out of hand, Humphrey decided that it was time for him to play it Bogart.

He let go, and allowed himself to fall down.

To say that it hurt was an understatement. "Ow, my butt! That really hurt!" He picked himself off the ground and began to check that everything was fine. It was, but he continued to act like it wasn't, and 'made sure' that his limbs worked fine, really doing nothing more than pushing dirt right into the eastern wolf's face. Kate just looked at Humphrey as though he was out of his mind, so the omega told her his 'excuse'. "Be careful Kate! There's something going 'round the pack. Wolves are dropping like flies! Don't want to get to close to others, if you know what I mean!"

He finally turned back to the other alpha. "Name's Humphrey!" He reached out and shook the red wolf's paw, grinning widely as he did so.

"Garth." The eastern alpha had no idea who this grey guy was, but neither his build not attitude reflected that of an alpha, so Garth wasn't worried.

Humphrey walked around the red wolf. "Wow, you are a big one! Almost like a moose. Where are you hiding them antlers?"

Garth just rolled his eyes. Definitely an omega. He came here for a very important mission, not to fool around with omegas. "Who's the coyote?" He asked Kate.

Humphrey froze briefly. Being called a coyote was one of the worst insults a wolf can get, only just short of personal attacks. Still, he was an omega after all. "Coyote? That's a good one! I mean, because I am like-"

Then Kate cut him off.

Kate hadn't really expected Garth to not realize who she was right away (because come on, with all the grooming that her mother had put her through, such a thing was impossible). From the looks of it at least Garth appeared to be more confident about this whole evening, which was a good thing. Clearing her throat, the alpha was about to also greet the eastern wolf when her sister suddenly leaned against her, whispering a single "wow" into her ear. "Lilly!" said Kate quietly, gently shoving her aside. "Stand up straight!"

She didn't want Garth to end up getting any reason to think that the two of them were rude, but this time when she was about to answer him something even more unexpected happened - Humphrey fell out of the sky. The omega has been a little weird ever since they were little puppies, but seriously... Where did he even come from? And what on earth did he think he was doing? Had Humphrey grown even crazier than Kate remembered him to be during the time she had been away to attend Alpha School?

For a moment back there she thought that Garth calling him a coyote was a little harsh, since he was her friend after all, but, thinking about it, alpha wolves would sometimes physically lash out at omegas for much less than having dirt kicked into their faces. Therefore, Garth's reaction could have ended up being far worse. "He's just a friend. Who shouldn't be here." she gave Humphrey a short glare before looking at her sister, "Lilly, would you mind taking Humphrey and running along?"

"I'm really sorry about that..." she added nervously as the two omegas walked away. "That was my sister Lilly, by the way... Uh, nice to meet you! I'm doing great, thank you for asking. Er, how about you?"

"Come on, Humphrey..." said Lilly quietly with a sigh, walking away with the disappointed omega. "Let's go eat some of those bitter berries..." She couldn't help but wonder, though. "How did you even end up on that tree?"

Humphrey was about to argue back to Kate that he had all the right to be here, but the glare she gave told very simply that he can't. His ears fell flat on his head in disappointment and he lowered his head. He hoped so much that he would be able to finally get to talk to her tonight, and maybe even get a howl or two together. Instead, this 'Barf' had to come from some dark hole in the eastern pack and steal Kate away from him.

Following Lilly away from the two alphas, Humphrey hardly noticed that Lilly had even asked him a question. He simply mumbled something along the lines of 'wolf piles', still busy looking back at Garth and feeling more jealous than ever. And Kate... Humphrey couldn't help but feel somewhat betrayed at how quickly Kate forced him to leave just because another guy had showed up. Well, he'll show her!

Leaving Lilly, the omega walked off towards a nearby creek to sulk to himself, as well as maybe even hatch out a plan on how to separate Barf and Kate, just to show the red alpha that omegas are more than capable of pulling their weight, as well as finally get that chance to talk to Kate. "Coyote.. blah!"

Garth only watched the two omegas for a short time after they left before returning his attention to Kate. "Me? I'm alright. Being training to lead the pack you know. But what about you? Wasn't alpha school supposed to have ended just recently? Or did you complete it long before?" As they talked, he lead Kate up the howling rock. Not only did this arrangement had to work out, but the other wolves had to see him and Kate get along. Even with other eastern wolves here, the two packs were still quite segregated, and as far as Garth was aware, only he and Kate were the only wolves of different packs to talk to one another.

As an alpha and the son of the leader of the eastern pack, it was his duty to show his, as well as the western pack, that a peaceful unification is possible. That meant howling with Kate from the top of the rock, where everyone can see them. "Do you ever feel nervous about the future? About having to take over and lead the pack?" He grinned. "Especially because very soon with the merger, the pack is going to get twice as big!"
