Survival of the fittest - AmyMarie and Shadowfax

Sam saw blood and immediately felt sick. He looked from George, to Aimee, to the medical supplies and then back to the unconscious Ashelin. He was scared and unsure of the whole situation and tried to think how Ashelin would for a moment, but to no aveil. His eyes then rested on the dead men.

"Did she kill them?" He asked.

He looked back at her arm and saw that there was already a small amount of blood patching the fresh bandages.

"Is she going to be alright?" He asked, tears welling up in his eyes.

"She killed one of them...I-I killed the other" George said, gulping after he said it. As he stared at the man on the floor, the blood from the cuts from the shards of glass had dried up. His eyes were open, shock and pain were still the expression etched all over his face. George knew he wasn't a good man, but he felt awful. He finally turned away from the dead man and looked back at Sam. When he saw the tears forming in his eyes, he approached the boy and put a hand on his shoulder.

"If we keep an eye on her wound, I'm pretty sure she'll be ok mate. Why don't you take a seat eh?". Aimee began applying pressure all over again, and re-bandaged it. The blood wasn't letting up. She bit her lip, much like George did not too long ago. It was a habit they both shared.
"George?" Her brother moved away from the boy and towards Aimee.
"The blood isn't letting up, is it?" he asked in a worried tone of voice, but quietly so that this boy wouldn't hear. Aimee shook her head,
"Not really, it seems to be stopping but-"

"Let me". George re-assumed his post, and took Ashelin's wrist into his own hands.
"Go look after that boy for me?". Aimee nodded, it was better if George took over.
The teenager gave the younger boy a soft smile, and she crouched to his level.
"So, what's your name?" she asked. She knew the boy must be scared and worried, and it was obvious this woman meant something to him.

Sam was shocked that this man had killed the man on the floor. Ashelin always seemed to quick to deal out death so he assumed it had been her doing. He tensed up as George placed a hand on his shoulder and began to try and fight back the tears. He was sick of being a coward and these people seemed friendly enough. His heart began to hammer in his chest when Aimee called George over. Bad thoughts ran through his head instantly. Oh god, please don't be dead Ash! His head said. Ashelin groaned though, but did not wake, but seeing her move he gave a sigh of relief.

He looked up as Aimee approached him and as she gestured to the seat, he slowly fell back into it his eyes still struggling to fight back tears. He wasn't as secretive as Ashelin was though so he answered her question.

"I.. Im Sam. That's Ash.. She won't tell me her full name, I don't even know if it's her real name" he said thoughtfully. "Wh-What are your names?"

Ashelin meant the world to him right now, but having people who actually spoke to him and didn't see him as a burden.. That was a different feeling for him.

Aimee sat beside Sam, resting her hand against her hand as he spoke. She didn't like it when children cried, or when anyone cried. It almost made her cry herself. This child though, he was trying his best not to let out the tears. She just wanted to pull him close.
"Hiya Sam" Aimee said softly "I'm Aimee, that's my big brother, George". She found it a little odd that the woman hadn't told him her full name. Surely the two must of been travelling together. The teenager waited for a reply, when she didn't receive one she continued to speak. "How old are you?".

It wasn't exactly a prying question, but she wanted to keep him talking. It might make him a little more calm. She empathized with him though. She remembered when George broke his arm when the two were at a summer camp. This woman sat with her and kept her talking while another was tending to her brother. She had been crying in sheer worry, and was surprised he hadn't started to cry either. "Don't hold it in lil' guy, if you need to cry, no one is here to judge you" she added.

"Im don't need to cry!" Sam said, blinking back tears.

He was determined not to let a tear fall. Ashelin had told him crying showed weakness and it solved nothing, yet everytime she'd said something like that he had cried more. He was almost tired of crying. I won't cry! I won't He told himself as he sat there with Aimee. He appreciated her company, but he was adamant the tears were not going to come.

"Im nine.. I don't know how old Ash is.. She's a good person really, she's just tough and doesn't know how to be kind.." Sam said, confusing himself with his own words.

The blood loss on Ashelin's arm began to slow and after a few moments it stopped. She still remained out cold though. She was off in a land where the virus didn't exist. Dreams were a peaceful place to be these days.

Aimee chuckled a little at his defiance, she lent a little closer to him.
"You know, you are brave for not crying. I would of...". She was about to speak again, but he beat her too it. Nine, he looked it. He looked no older, maybe a little younger. She didn't exactly doubt that Ashelin wasn't a good person, though she had to see it to believe it. Aimee was trusting, but not too trusting. George had changed the bandages again once the blood stopped and checked over her again.
"She's stable, and the blood has stopped" George said with relief.

He began to think about what to do. The men either side of him would be waking up soon, and Ashelin was still passed out. He wasn't going to leave her. Perhaps...he could just carry her to her own car? No. The men might wake up before she did. She'd have to come with him and Aimee. So would that little boy, especially if he was travelling with her.

Sam smiled as George announced the bleeding had stopped. He looked over at Ashelin's sleeping form, but horror stirred again as one of the men on the floor twitched and moaned. Sam looked at George and then to Aimee.

"We should.. grab all the food we can and get out of here... I can't drive though.. What will we do? What about Ashelin? What if they wake up and hurt her? What if they kill me?!" Sam always asked too many questions when panicked and he began to pace.

He opened his bag and began to throw random things from the shelf into his little backpack like Ashelin had always taught him when they raided a shop. He wasn't aware that George wasn't planning on leaving him here so he was worrying unnecessarily.

(Better call it a night. I'll try and post tomorrow before work x))

(I'll post in the morning actually, I'm off to bed too. I'll edit my reply into this post ^^')

George didn't panic. It was situations like these he had to remain calm in. He went over to Ashelin and heaved her off the chair as gently as he could, supporting her weight. He pulled her up into a standing position and began shuffling to the door, grabbing the medical supplies as he went and stuffing them into his pockets.

"Sam!" he called, watching the boy rushing around. "Sam, come on, we're going" he said a little louder. The boy wasn't paying attention. "Aimee, get him and get out as quickly as possible". George opened the door with his free hand, the groans of the men were growing louder. His sister ran to the boy, grabbed his arm and pulled him away from the shelves.
"Not a time for collecting supplies, lets go, before they wake up fully".

Aimee guided Sam to the door and then gave him a shove to get him moving, she glanced behind her, the men were on their knees. Aimee began to sprint out of there, still with a hold on Sam's arm. George had got Ashelin into the back seat and got himself into the drivers seat. "George, hold on!" Aimee shouted. The girl turned to the young boy beside her. "Is there anything in that car you need?" she asked hurriedly, pointing at the car she had seen earlier.

Sam blinked with confusion as George said the words 'Sam come on we're going' They weren't abandoning him. They were helping him and Ashelin. His senses returned and as he looked on, the men around them began to come to. He allowed Aimee to grab his arm and pull him from the scene. One of the men tried to reach for Sam's leg but he missed by about three inches. Once they were out in the car park, Sam saw Ashelin's handgun on the floor and grabbed it in his small hands. He stuffed it in his jacket pocket and followed Aimee to their car.

When she asked him if there was anything he needed his face fell. All his and Ashelin's possessions were in that jeep. But did he have time to get the two backpacks? Of course he did. He had to make time. Without waiting for George's approval, Sam bolted towards the jeep. Then a gunshot rang out across the open road. The men in the shop were taking aim at them. Usually Sam would cower in fear, but he knew if he stopped he would be dead.

A moving target is harder to hit than a stationary one Ashelin's voice echoed in his head as he ran full pelt towards the jeep. Once he got to the jeep, he leapt behind it and flung the doors open. A bullet shattered the window though and Sam let a screech escape him.

(OOC: Not sure if you'll see this, but check the planning thread! xD)

Once the gunshots started, Aimee began cursing under her breath. She found herself unable to move however. Sam was gone from her side and she stood alone. George was screaming at her to move. It was a bullet that narrowly missed her shoulder that made her run. Not to where George wanted her though. She ran towards the other car. She wasn't about to let that boy get his stuff alone. Hearing the screech, she first thought he had been hit.

She darted behind the car and moved very slowly towards Sam. In another situation, Aimee would of told him to forget about the supplies. In this new world though, supplies meant everything.
"Do you t-think you can climb in and grab your things w-while still being under cover?" she stuttered, for the shots were getting more accurate and closer each time.

George was watching on in horror. He had given up shouting at them both to come back, he had to move to help them. He started up the engine of his car to drive to the jeep, but it stalled. He threw his hands against the steering wheel in fustration. The horn went off, and more gunshots were being fired in his direction. Growling, he started the engine up again. His foot was pressed firmly on reverse.
"Come on car..." he said under his breath.
