"Tanabi?! Tanabi?!" Nala cried once she got to the cave.
"Tanabi?" Kiara called. "Where is he?"
Suddenly a lioness walked in. "Simba... Nala... I'm so sorry," she whispered. "Tanabi is dead."
Simba started to weep. The king had had everything he needed and wanted; a beautiful, kind mate, a strong territory, a loyal pride, and three healthy, happy cubs.... now only two of them.
Kopa, the littlest, tilted his head. "B-b-but, how?!" he wailed.
"He died a brave death, little Kopa," the lioness said softly. "He sacrificed himself to save three cubs that were trapped in a cave. Your brother was a noble lion. He would have made an excellent king."
Tears fell from the family's eyes. They couldn't believe it; their kind and noble Tanabi was gone. And he was never coming back.
This is my personal theory of why Simba is so over-protective of Kiara, and why he seemed to freak out even more when there had been a wildfire. He lost his first son to fire. So that's why I think he freaks out over Kiara's safety so much [and like I said, even more so during the wildfire that Kiara was nearly killed in.]
