Shadow was born in the outlands but never really understood their ways of life. He ran away and tried to join the pridelands. The lions there (Simba, Nala, Tojo, etc) never really liked him. He was just, as they said, "different". When he left to become a loner he met Emerald. She was his best friend. Later they fell in love.
