Tembo is a very large, bulky elephant with a kindly nature. She lived a pretty good life in her elephant herd, with her daughter, Mpendwa. But one day, while picking leaves off of a tree for her daughter, she heard a slight squeal and saw a tiny little animal.
She was intrigued by the small, furry thing and later found out that it was a lion cub. Despite the other elephants' fears of the cub growing up to be a predator, Tembo was determined to raise the cub to be a good, fair lioness.
Msaada, the name she gave the cub, grew up to eat leaves and other vegetation. Despite raising Msaada to be an herbivore like the others and raising her to be gentle, the other elephants looked at the cub with sneers of contempt, which infuriated Tembo.
When a rhino attacked Msaada, Tembo was forced to take action and protect her adoptive daughter. The other elephants' hostility increased towards little Msaada, and even more so when a lioness was hunting a calf and then tried to take Msaada away. Finally through with the other elephants' hostility to her daughter, Tembo left her herd and brought Msaada and Mpendwa with her.
