The winds had shifted Direction and it didn't go unnoticed by any of the animals. It was that time again...that very special event that happened with all the rulers of the pridelands since the creator of the occasion, Mufasa.
A new cub, made to rule in his or her father or mother's place, was being presented.
Animals of all sizes crowded around Pride rock, waiting anxiously for the most recent rulers, Simba and Nala to present the new heir.
------------
Nala lay on Pride rock's smooth rock surface, a sun golden cub snoring peacefully in her colorless paws. Simba hung over her smiling down at his new young as did his son Kopa, who was cheesing at his new sibling in wonder. "She's beautiful." said Simba in complete awe. "Yeah..."Kopa agreed. A delicate gust from the wind blew through the three lions fur, telling them the adorance would have to wait. Rafiki annoited the cub the same way he had done Simba, and Kopa all those years ago and presented the heiress to the animals below.
The elephants blew their trumpets.
The hoofed animals pawed the ground with their hooves.
The doves flew about showering the sky with white feathers, serving as confetti.
The Tigers and other lions from neighboring prides roared their excitement.
As their future Queen, Shani, was presented.
------------------------------------
"And just where are you going so early in the morning?"
Shani gritted her teeth and frowned glancing up to where her older brother stared down at her with an arrogant smile and a raised brow. "Oh come on Kopa! I'm old enough to go out on my own now!" "Sure you are Shani. Sure you are." Shani frowned, leering at Kopa the best she could with her sapphire blue eyes. "Whadoya mean by that?" Kopa leaped from the rock he had seated himself upon, landing in front his sister. "Firstly." Said her older brother, looking her over. "Your too small to prance about like an adult. There are many creatures in the pridelands who'd love to have you as a snack." Dispite telling her this Shani was not convinced."Like who?"
"Gee i dunno...Hyenas, Vultures, crocodiles...other lions..."
"Liar."
"Well i haven't exactly encountered all of them before but i was abducted by Vultures when i was just you age. Mom and Dad met Hyenas and crocodiles before."
Shani smirked, starting to feeling confident." Then What About the 'other lions'"
"You really have to watch out for them. Met one myself. I'll never forget her. Red burning eyes that eat away at your very soul. Claws that always extend, always ready for a fight." Kopa whispered in a dark tone to intentionally scare his younger sister. "Slender like a snake with sharp teeth to match, and fur that blends perfectly with the desert." Shani shivered at the description of this mystery lioness. "You can't see her...but she can see you!" The blue eyed cub gulped visibly. "W-who is she?" The teenage lion clenched his eyes shut as if he had been struck and was in pain. "That name...ever time it rolls off my tounge i can see, hear, and feel my impending doom!" "What is it?! Tell me!" Shani squeaked. Kopa pulled shani close with a golden-orange paw, his muzzle right next to her stripe-less ear. "Zira!" he boomed. Kiara screeched and ran behind the nearest object and peaked back out at Kopa only to frown. Her brother was laughing to hard it looked painful.
"Kopa." said a stern voice. The teenager stopped at once glancing up to meet his father's red eyes and his mother's blue eyes, both very displeased. "What did you do to Shani?" "Don't worry. I didn't hurt her." Said Kopa waving Simba's anger off with a paw. "I just told her 'the story'! She screamed cause she a chicken." And with that Shani's challenging attitude was back and she ran up to Kopa. "Am not!" "Are too." "Am not!" "Are too." "Am not!" Kopa chuckled, ruffling the furry tuft of fur on his little sister's head. "Face it shrimp. You can't handle Zira. Or any lion from the outlands for that matter." "Can too!" Shani growled pulling away from Kopa's paw. "Your brother's right Shani. Outlanders...you can never turn your back on them." "Really? How come?" Kopa snorted at his sister' ignorance. "Because they're murderous...and backstabbing." Nala gave her mate a nudge. "I think you two have lectured her enough." She nodded towards Shani. "Have fun, Shani." Her daughter perked nuzzling Nala's paw before running off. "Thanks mom!" said she as she ran off. "Stay on the trail I marked for you!" The king called out. "Sure thing Dad!"
Simba watched her run off then turned to Nala. "What if she gets hurt?" " Simba she'll be fine. You can't protect her forever." Nala stated factually. "I know..." "Besides. She needs room to breathe and she'll need even more room to breathe once she's older." Simba sighed at Nala's comment. She was right. Eventually Shani would want to find a mate and have cubs and he would be seen as an anomaly by his own daughter. "Very well. I'll let up."
"Good. For you and her."
The king watched Nala enter the den, and turned to his son who looked back in confusion. "What?"
"Since you scared Shani with your horror stories about Zira, I want you to look after her."
"Dad she'll be okay."
"You know she's bound to run off."
"Yeah but-"
"Kopa."
Simba looked rigid, and looked at his son expactantly. Eventually the stare off was won by Simba and Kopa rose to paws in defeat. "Fine." he groaned, padding off into the long grass.
----------------------
Shani bounced threw the grass, hot on the tail of a lizard. She hadn't noticed the ground become increasingly uncomfortably underpaw nor how the grass had gotten shorter, it's lush green color turn dull brown and dead. The reptile leaped from a boulder into a small creek and the princess was quick to follow a paw landing right on the lizards tail. The small creature writhed and squirmed in fear of being eaten until at last Shani decided to let him go from the goodness of her heart.
"So that's it?"
Shani turned quickly, another cub coming her way. His previous statement had caused her to raise a delicate black brow, and as he got closer she could tell from his scruffy, lanky form he was not a pridelander. He galloped pass, giving her a glare as he did and caught the lizard she just released. "Your supposed to finish it, not let it go." He shook his head, "Pridelanders. Your too soft." " They're soft. Not me. And just WHO are you to tell me what i'm supposed to do?" Shani asked, taking a threatening step forward. The brown cub puffed out his chest in an attempt to look bigger, starring her down with Emerald eyes. "I am Kovu. Prince of the outlands." "Your...an outlander?" "That's right." "Really? What's it like out there?" " Hot. No water anywhere. Barely anything bigger than a field mouse. Termites everwhere..." Kovu paused looking to her, "And it's all your fault." "Me? What are you talking about? I didn't even know you guys existed til today!" "Simba...he made us outsiders." 'Dad...?' Shani thought, astonished. "Why?" "Mother won't tell me." The two cubs went silent, Kovu lost in though while Shani pawed the ground akwardly...
"Shani! Where are you?"
A voice had put Kovu on high alert, and he searched about for the source. "Who was that?" The outlander prince asked the princess. She rolled her eyes. "Calm down. It's just Zazu." "Zazu?" Kovu had never heard such a name. "Some bird." And as Shani said a blue hornbill flew into view. "Ah there you are!" he turned his head to an unknown figure. "Kopa! I found her!" Shani frowned as her big brother padded in front of her with a annoyed looked. "Shani, dad told you to stay on the trail!" "I wandered off on accident." "Sure you did." said Kopa sarcastically. He then noticed the brown ball of fur taking cover behind his little sister's bright orange form. He leaned to the side to get a better look, "And...who is this?" "Oh! This is Kovu!" Shani answered giving Kopa clear view of th cub. "Kovu?!" her brother gasped. The said cub glanced up and met Kopa's warm smile. "W-who are you." "My names Kopa!" the teenage lion said padding toward Kovu. "Do you by any chance have a sister named Vitani or a brother named Nuka?" A roar errupted from the grass along with a tan lanky frame, with blood red eyes. The figure hovered protectively over Kovu as Shani had taken cover behind Kopa's back leg both protecters glaring at each other menacingly.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the fallen prince." "What are you doing here...Zira?" Shani shuddered behind Kopa's paw. She WAS real! "Now...do you think that's fair? Accuse me of tresspassing but let my son frollic about." "I don't care. What do you want?" " Oh nothing...maybe a snack?" the lioness caught a glimpse of the cub hiding behing Kopa's hind leg. She smirked. " Hand over that tasty morsel and i'll be on my way. Maybe...i'll even answer a couple of your questions." Kopa shook his head. "If you want her you'll have to get through me." Zira chuckled morbidly. "With pleasure." The lioness leaped upon the teenager, trying to get her canines around his throat but a well muscled hind paw flung her back before she could do so. " I may have failed at killing you when you were a cub, but mommy and daddy aren't here to save you this time." her threat didn't intimidate Mheetu in the slightest. "Zazu, get my mother and father! Shani! Hide!" The hornbill darted off and Shani hid in the tall grass, watching her brother repel the older lion. Zira snarled, dragging her claws across the bridge of Mheetu's nose causing him to double over in pain. She stalked up to him, a toothy twisted smile present on her features. " Fallen Prince. The name suites you perfectly." Shani turned her head, unable to view her brother's demise. Imagine her suprise when she heard a thunderous roar, the sound of claws scrapping flesh along with it.
Turning back she could see their father's large stocky form and full red mane in place of Kopa. Her brother lay on the ground, trying to convince their mother he was ok. Shani watched Zira and Simba exchange a few words before Simba uttered the two words she was longing to hear.
"Get out."
--------------------
Keep going?
--------------------
After Simba was sure the offending lioness was gone, he turned to his son. "Are you alright?" Kopa smiled, "Just a scrape. I'll live." Simba turned to Shani. "Shani what were you thinking? Didn't I tell you to stay on the trail?" "Yeah..." "So why didn't you?" "I was chasing this lizard and next thing I new I saw that cub. Besides, there's nothing worth seeing on the trail!" "But the trail is safe! And as the future queen you need to be safe at all times." Shani glared,"Safe is boring..." Kopa watched in mild amusement as Shani and Simba went back and forth, shaking his head. His father's constant need to know his daughter was safe would never correspond to Shani's adventurous nature. "Prince Kopa?" Kopa turned, Zazu perched on his shoulder. "Yeah?"
"Safe may be boring but it'll keep you alive, Shani." "I bet if i wasn't the heir i wouldn't have to listen to this...."
Simba's eyebrow rose,"What?"
"Sorry to interupt but we have bigger problems to deal with."
"Like what?"
"You know Zira? Yeah, she wasn't the only one. Zaz' spotted some more of outlanders."
The hornbill ruffled his feather's at his new nickname, "That's Zazu!"
"Kopa, take Shani home. Zazu, rally the lionesses."
"Yes sire!"
Simba glanced back at his two kids, Seeing Shani leap atop Kopa's head as the teenager walked off. Nala spoke up,"Ready where you are." "Let's go."
----------------------
Kopa trecked back to pride rock, Shani atop his head glancing curiously at the stars. "Kopa...are there really king's in the stars?" Kopa looked up as well, remebering when Simba used to tell him about all the great king's. "Yeah...dad used to tell me about them all the time." "How come he's never told me?" "Well...he's been busy lately. What with the outsiders and having to teach you to be a proper ruler." "...Hey Kopa?" "Yes Shani?" "What did Zira mean when she called "you the fallen prince"?" Kopa glanced up at Shani, his sister staring back curiosly. "Well...when my dad took over the kingdom from Scar, Zira thought he was a murderer. Mom didn't want Zira in the pride and begged Dad to exile her, but dad didn't have the heart to exile a lionesses with two defenseless young cubs and decided to let Zira and our two cousin's stay. I was born shorly after and was soon big enough to play with my cousins but after a while Zira didn't approve. She ordered Nuka to take me someplace secluded so she could finall kill me but we had been such close friends Nuka couldn't do it. As punishmennt she scraped Nuka across the face causing him to go blind in one eye. She then blamed me for his blindness and chased me down. If it wasn't for Vitani alerting our parents of my attack I wouldn't be here right now. Zira was exiled along with Nuka. And Vitani left on her own accord. She didn't want to be seperated from her mother or her brother. As for me I felt to weak and useless my will to become the next king of he pridelands was gone. I told my father and mother and some time later you came along." Kopa paused, lowering his head so Shani could leap off. "That's why me and dad want you to be careful. If something happens to you, I'll have to be the heir. And to be honest, after losing to a lioness two times now, i don't think i could do it."
Kopa smiled as his sister looked back at him with mild concern. "Go on. Get some sleep. It's late and past your bed time as it is." Shani nodded padding into the den where Sarafina and Sarabi along with a few other lionesses were lounging about. As silently as she could she settled into her grandmother's paws, an drifted off to sleep.

The outlands
----------------------------
"Vitani! Instead of staring into the sky for no reason, you could help me catch some of these feild mice." Annoyed, Vitani turned to her brother, Nuka, with a scowl. "Catch'em yourself fleabag!" "I'm Scar's true heir! I don't need this!" "Correction, you were Scar's heir until you chickened out on our plan to kill Kopa." "He was my cousin!" "And Mufasa was Scar's brother." Vitani stated in a very matter-of-factly way. " I'm the firstborn of Scar himself! Of royal blood!" "Maybe so...but it was Scar's dying wish Kovu was to be his heir." "What's that rat got that i don't?" "Oh i don't know....Respect, brains, two working eyes..." Nuka sighed,"Your not helping Vitani." Vitani Chuckled,"So i've heard Nuka. Now...those feild mice please? And make sure you get them before mother gets back." The young adult Nuka glowered at Vitani before going back to work. "I wonder what's taking her..." Vitani mumbled under her breath.
---------------------
go on?
---------------------
The teenage lioness saw three of her kind coming over the horizon. As they got closer she could easily make them out. Her mother, Zira, walked in the middle while her two uncles Moyo and Sahala, Zira's maneless brother's walked on either side of her. "Mother!" Vitani smiled, bounding over to Zira. As she saw her daughter approach Zira dropped Kovu into the sand. The cub winced when he made contact with the ground and glanced up. Nuka hovered over him, leering into his emerald green eyes for who-knows-what reason.
