Chapter Four: Shocks and Surprises
Mohatu slowly made his way back to the meadow where he found Tahiti alone. He walked up to her hesitantly. She didn't even seem to notice he was there!
"Hi," he said slowly. Tahiti looked at him for a second and then turned away.
"Look, I... I guess we got off the wrong paw, here... I didn't mean to sound all high and mighty... I'm sorry. I'm just a cub who needs a friend... just like you!" Mohatu finished.
"You already
have friends!" Tahiti said with a laugh.
"I want
you to be my friend, too," Mohatu said as he looked at her and smiled hopefully.
Tahiti smiled at him and said, "That's how you get someone to be friends with you."
Mohatu's face lit up as he said, "Wanna go see an old friend of my dad's?" he asked her. Tahiti raised her eyebrows at this.
"Oh come on! You'll
love Tembo! He makes the best waterslide in the jungle!" Mohatu said. A mischievous smile adorned Tahiti's face as she followed him to the waterhole.
Tembo was taking a relaxing swim in the waterhole when he heard someone call out to him.
"Hey, Tembo!" he heard Mohatu say.
"Mohatu! You're just in time! And who's this new friend of yours?" he asked Mohatu.
"Oh... This is Tahiti. She's new around here... So I thought I should get her here for the waterslide!" Mohatu said excitedly.
Tembo laughed at this as he said, "Great idea! Now I know you're your father's son! Hop on!"
Mohatu climbed on Tembo's lowered back immediately. Tahiti looked a little apprehensive.
Mohatu noticed this and said, "Come on, Tahiti! Trust me! Tembo won't let you fall.
I won't let you fall!"
Tahiti smiled and got on. Soon, Tembo was standing up in all his glory. Tahiti looked down and shivered a little. Then she looked at Mohatu who nodded at her reassuringly.
"Alright! Are you two ready?" Tembo asked them.
Tahiti gulped as Mohatu said, "Yeah!"
Tembo lowered his head and dipped his trunk into the water.
"That's our cue!" Mohatu said and they slid down Tembo's trunk towards the water. But just as they were about to reach the end, Tembo raised his trunk and flipped it. The cubs were in the air and dropped into the water with a loud splash. They resurfaced laughing hysterically. Tembo was laughing too.
"You're right," Tahiti said after she was done laughing. "He
does make the best waterslide in the jungle!"
Mohatu looked at her and said, "I'm glad you enjoyed it."
Time passed and Mohatu and Tahiti became very close friends. They would usually spend a lot of time together, and mostly on their own. Makani and Busara weren't surprised, but Zahara didn't like this one bit. She didn't want
anyone to steal Mohatu from her. Least of all a lioness who wasn't even born to someone in the pride. She didn't realize the fact that Makani felt very sorry for her and didn't have the heart to tell her to forget Mohatu and spend more time with him... Busara, on the other hand, felt a little left out. Although Mohatu
always found time to play
only with his siblings every day, she was no longer the only lioness in his life... Even when he was with Zahara things were different, because he had never wandered off to spend some time with her
alone. But that was
all he ever wanted to do with Tahiti.
So one day, when Mohatu had just returned home from a refreshing swim with Tahiti, Busara decided to pluck up the courage to ask him.
"Mo... can I ask you something?" she began.
"Sure, sis... Go on," Mohatu said encouragingly.
"Why do you spend so much time with Tahiti?" Busara asked sadly.
"Come on, sis! You know how much I love you! You'll always be my little sister! No one can ever take your place! Not even Tahiti," Mohatu said affectionately.
"Your brother's right," they heard their mother say. "Tahiti is only his friend... You are his sister. Your brother will always care for you."
Mohatu's face flushed a little at this, but he didn't want to say anything just yet. He'd begun to think that he liked Tahiti more than he'd normally like anyone... But no one else had to know that.
Mahiri looked at Busara and said, "You never felt this way when Mohatu was friends with Zahara... He still spends a lot of time with her, too..."
"Yeah, but this isn't the same! He sneaks her away and they go play on their own!" Busara complained.
"That's coz i like spending more time with her! Look, sis... I try my best to make time for you and Makani... If that's not good enough, then I let me know what I can do to fix that!" Mohatu said.
Busara nodded and said, "No, you're right... It's ok... I'll just have to get used to it."
Mohatu nuzzled her and watched her go to her usual corner. Then he looked at his mother and asked, "Is she gonna hate me?"
"No, Mo... She'll be just fine. She just needs time. And is this true about Tahiti?" Mahiri asked her son.
"Well," Mohatu began, "I do like her better than most of my friends."
"Better than Zahara?" Mahiri asked him.
"In a way, yeah... Zahara's fun and all, but she listens to me too easily. Sometimes I need someone who can honestly tell me I'm wrong. Zahara doesn't do that!" Mohatu said.
Mahiri sighed as she said, "I see... But Mohatu, I want you to make sure you don't neglect your siblings or your friends because of Tahiti."
"Why're you asking me all this?" Mohatu asked.
Mahiri hesitated for a minute, but then she said, "Your father and i will let you know soon enough... When he returns, both of us will tell you and Zahara about it. I guess Gaea already knows about it, but still... We should be the ones telling you."
And with that, she turned and walked out of the den, mostly to find Dhahabu. Mohatu wondered what they had to tell him. He looked at Zahara briefly. She was sleeping. Soon, he saw his parents come in.
Dhahabu came up to him and said, "Your mother tells me you want to know something about your future?"
"My future?" Mohatu asked incredulously.
"Yes, Mo... You have to know why we decided this for you... And how we came to that decision," Dhahabu said.
Mohatu didn't like this at all. "What have you decided for me?" he asked them.
Dhahabu sighed and said, "Gaea, can you come here with Zahara, please?" Gaea and Zahara walked over to them and the young cub sat beside Mohatu as she smiled at him.
"Alright Mohatu," Mahiri began, "When the two of you were born, we knew you'd be good friends." Mohatu and Zahara smiled at each other at this.
"So we decided, since you were Crown Prince, Mohatu, that you two rule these lands as King and Queen when you come of age!" Dhahabu said. Mahiri and Gaea were smiling at them, but the two cubs were confused.
"Huh? What does that mean?" Mohatu asked them.
"It means that one day, you two are going to be married," Mahiri said happily. Mohatu and Zahara looked at each other, surprised. But in a second, the look on Zahara's face turned to that of happiness, but Mohatu's eyes were still widened in surprise.
