Chapter Four
They walked in silence, Jelani taking the lead but occasionally gazing back to make sure the cub did not get left behind.
Once or twice he thought he heard his name being called, a suspicion to which he paid little attention. There was no water in sight, which meant that they had to get back home before it got too warm. The little one could not die from thirst, he had to be well looked after. This Jelani repeated inside his head as he took yet another step forward. He had to make sure Buru was safe.
Ahead of them lay the dry savannah, a land of neverending agony that symbolised their future. It occured to Jelani that they were doomed. The very second the lion had sunk his sharp teeth into the lioness's neck, he had doomed her children to a short life ending in pain. How would they even stand a chance out here? If he somehow managed to improve his rather poor hunting skills, he would still be at risk of getting attacked by a rogue. And if that were to happen, all hope would be lost for Buru, who then could do nothing but sit down and wait for death..
Just thinking about it made Jelani cringe, yet he could not escape the truth. With their mother gone, they would have to fight for their survival. Which would require strength he didn't know if he had.
I'm never going back
The past is in the past
