Umoja: The Story of a Prince

“I can’t go through with any of this. I don’t love her. I can’t be thinking of having cubs. I am just over two years old. I’m not ready for this. Let my baby sibling be king or queen or whatever.” Ajali snarled at the open air.

“I don’t care about the pride.” A slash across a sapling.

“I don’t care about cubs.” A twin to join its brother.

“I don’t care about Fuli.” A third, drawing an oozing green sap from the young tree.

“I don’t even care about my parents!” A final slash brought the tree to the ground. The young lion collapsed in a sob. Tears flowed freely from his chocolate brown eyes.

“It will be okay.” Ashiki purred as she walked out of the underbrush. She looked around at the clearing. To the left there was a small waterfall, trickling into a pool before flowing off into the river. Moss covered the ground and vines snaked their way up the trees. The sunlight barely managed to get any of his golden rays to hit the lush floor.

Ajali felt her brush up against him. Her fur brushed against his. Her scent filled his nostrils, intoxicating him. She smelled of crushed berries and fresh cut foliage. It was overwhelming him. He could feel his blood flow hot. The sobs faded.

Ashiki gently placed her head against his. She could hear his heartbeat. Her blue eyes closed.
He closed his eyes as well, the tears had finally stopped. He felt at peace, but another emotion was raging inside him.

“I’m supposed to feel this way about Fuli.” He said without thinking. His eyes widened and he allowed his head to fall to the floor.

* * *

A roar echoed through the cave. A sound that was chilling, haunting, as if death itself had appeared. It was full of pain and fear.

“It’s Layla!” Tufani yelped. He had been the first to enter the cave. There, he had seen the queen, surrounded by her own blood, thrashing around and breathing heavy. “The cubs! Get Chuki! She needs help!”

* * *

With his sudden movement, Ashiki stumbled. Had he actually said those words? He feels for he like a lover? A mate? Her world was flipping, and all she could think of was the caramel lion next to her. Her heart was racing.

“I like you, Ajali. More than that, I think I love you.” She purred; confused on where she found the courage so say the words she had been too scared to utter.

“And I, you.” The male purred back.

* * *

Jalil entered the cave at full speed, his paws thundering when word of his mate reached him. And now he looked upon his beloved Layla, breathing heavy, soaked by her own blood, and tears rolled down his face. “Oh, Layla.” He purred as he lay in front of her.

* * *

Ajali licked her cheek. Everything felt so right. A fire burned in his belly. He intertwined his tail with hers and pressed himself closer to her.

She purred and rubbed her head against his neck. This was what she had always wanted, ever since she was a young cub. Her heart ached with a burning sensation. She could feel it flowing through her.

He took a deep breath and stood up, circling the lioness. His eyes took in her whole body; the curve of her neck, the arch of her back, the rippling muscles under her wheat-colored pelt .Things he had never seen in Fuli.

Ashiki’s eyes remained glued to his, watching his every move. She shifted her position ever so slightly. The atmosphere had changed. Hormones were flying, and both of them knew it.

* * *

“One cub: a boy.” Chuki called. She picked up the tiny chocolate cub and placed him down away from the blood. She had felt neither heartbeat nor breath. Her eyes flashed up and met Jalil’s. “Stillborn. They are too early.” She cooed sadly.

“No…” Jalil growled. “Oh, Layla.” He pressed his muzzle against her cheek. She was in pain. Breathing heavy and seizing up. She could barely hear him.

“I… love… you…” She managed to exhale.

Chuki suddenly placed another cub next to his brother. It was another dark cub with a little cream tuft of fur on his head. He, like his brother was stillborn. “I am so sorry, Jalil.” The aged lioness whispered as she went back to the birth.

Suddenly, Layla fell limp. Her eyes closed. The staggered rise and fall of her chest had ceased. The queen’s heart fluttered, and then went silent.

The healer got up quickly. In her jaws was a small cub, a caramel color, only shades lighter than her brother, Ajali. She was crying out. Chuki put the cub down, away from the scene and began to lick her clean.

Jalil, however, had not heard the cry. He sat next to his dead mate, not caring if her blood soaked through his pelt. He looked up, at the roof of the cave and opened his mouth.

* * *

Two roars echoed through the valley; one from the sorrow of death, the other the joy of new life.
Ajali exited the jungle with Ashiki in tow. He was greeted by Tufani, who shared with him the news of his mother’s death and his newborn sister’s life.

“You’re father won’t accept her.” Tufani explained. “But she won’t survive long without any nourishment. Chuki is gathering what she can from your mother. But that will only last a week at most.”

The prince flicked a look over to Ashiki, who blushed and looked away. Both of them knew what they had done was forbidden, and what they had created together was wrong. Ajali was promised to Fuli, and there was no changing that.

Ashiki walked past Ajali, unsure of what was to become of them. Or their unborn cub.

This certainly is progressing quickly, Kmay. (My apologies about the delay in commenting. Haven't found the time until now.) I am a little surprised at how quickly the queen perished, but I know you've something in mind. I'll be looking forward to reading more.

Yeah, I know. Killing the queen was needed earlier in the story. But I just need to clarify some things, just in case they were a little confusing. First, the cubs were born early, thus the reason of the two dead ones. Second, Layla was dying from the start of the birth, not just at the end. I have not witnessed a lion birth (or any birth for that matter), so I didn't know how to describe one going terribly wrong.

*Nods.* All right. I do see your point, though. But, yes, that is understandable. Stillborn births are often connected to prematurity, in animals and humans both. Although, thank you for pointing out that Layla was already dying. I hadn't seen any indications before it came up. As for the last, well, I don't think many have seen a lion give birth and be an author too, XD.

The sky had been black for a while. For about a day and a half, it had been raining. The glorious sun had hidden himself from the valley, bringing a darkness that made the whole pride shiver.
Jalil had been very distant since his beloved Layla had died during birth several days ago. He had not visited his newborn daughter. Instead, he remained at the site where the pride had buried the queen and her two sons. The king slept there, he even carried his food over to the grave and ate there.

While his father grieved, Ajali had found several responsibilities. Not only was he taking over the king’s duties, he was the also sole provider for his cub sister, whom he had named Muujiza, as her life was a miracle. She would not receive the same ceremony he had as a cub. The pride was still upset, and no one was able to celebrate. Some of the lions even blamed Muujiza for Layla’s death.
“Fuli, aren’t you going on your solo hunt today?” the prince asked. With the head of the hunting party, his mother, gone, Ajali knew another lioness had to take her place. The thought of replacing his mother made him feel hollow inside. You aren’t replacing her, he had told himself many times.
“What about Tufani and Ashiki?” Fuli demanded. Her eyes were cold and her tail lashed angrily from side to side.

“I need Tufani here with me right now. And Ashiki is not old enough yet.” The caramel lion snarled.
Fuli unsheathed her claws. Her blue eyes bore into his, her fury clear. The cream fur on her back was standing on end and she was more than willing to fight. She took a step back, her rage building. She was planning on pouncing.

Ajali prepared himself for the female. He spread his paws out, ready for her weight to clash with his.

Out of the blue, Fuli seemed to have changed her mind. Her fur settled onto her back and she sat down and licked her front paw.

“I am going on my hunt today. I talked to Chuki about it. The ceremony will be soon.” She purred, as if nothing had happened. She picked herself up and flicked her tail. She started walking away before she paused and looked back. “See you then.”

The prince blinked several times, clearly confused about what had just happened. He watched the cream figure disappear down the cliff. He was now pretty alone. The hunting party had gone out already and would not be back for a few hours. Jalil was sleeping next to Layla’s grave. Chuki was in her den, He knew Ashiki was in the den with Tufani and Muujiza, and so he walked quickly in that direction.

He entered the cave to find the three lions curled up. Muujiza was tiny, much smaller that any cub he had ever seen. Her silky pelt was almost the same shade as his, but she had several striking features. Her underbelly and toes were pure white, and her tiny tail tuft was jet black. He had not seen her eyes yet, but he hoped they were the same shade as his mother’s.

A soft voice snapped him out of his thoughts. “Ajali, he knows.” Ashiki had purred.
Ajali was cautious at first, but the warmness of the tan lioness’s words reassured him and he walked over and licked Ashiki on the top of her head.

“I knew you two were right for each other.” Tufani purred and butted Ajali. “I just didn’t think you guys would move so quickly. I mean a cub?!?”

Ashiki blushed. So far, only Ajali and Chuki had known of Ashiki’s pregnancy. Chuki was the one who suggested that she use her milk to feed Muujiza.

“No one else can know.” Ajali responded with a playful swipe. “I do love Ashiki, but if anyone else found out that I had a cub with her and not Fuli she might be exiled with our cub.”

Silence fell in the cave. It was a heavy subject. But Ajali nudged the tiny cub suckling at Ashiki’s side. His gaze fell on Ashiki’s slightly swollen belly. He felt a pang of guilt. That was his fault. She could lose her home, and it was all because of him. She could lose her life, like his mother.
“Ashiki, I-“ he started.

“Hello, darling.” Fuli purred as she entered the cave. She quickly eyed Tufani and Ashiki before brushing past Ajali and licking her cheek softly.

She looked at Muujiza. “So, Ashiki, I hear you’re pregnant. Who’s the father?” she growled.

Ashiki swallowed. “A lion I met.” She lied. It had been decided upon by her and Ajali. As the story went, Ashiki had met a lion in the jungle. They had met in secret for a while, and eventually he got her pregnant.

“Oh, yeah. That’s right. I forgot. You have been sneaking out to mess around with a stranger.” She snarled. “Well, at least Muujiza can live. Too bad it’s off a pathetic creature like you.”

“Fuli!” Tufani snarled and swiped at her.

The agile lioness easily sprung back. “What?” she asked, innocently. “I was just saying I wouldn’t want my sister to suckle from a lioness who can’t control her hormones.”

Ajali roared and lunged at her. He easily pinned her down. His open jaw was inches from her throat. “Don’t you ever talk to her like that.” He snarled as he pulled away to look in her eyes.
“Why? It’s not like she’s your mate.” The tan lioness snapped back and slid out from under the caramel lion. “Oh yeah, you’re father talked to me today. He asked when we were going to have cubs. I said soon. Now, he thinks I’m pregnant. You don’t want to upset him, now do you love?” she growled with a smirk. She walked out of the cave, swishing her tail, clearly pleased.

Ajali looked down. He could not break his father’s heart like that. But he could not do that to Ashiki. He locked eyes with Tufani, who simply stared back with his mouth open. The prince could see the apology in his blue eyes.

Ashiki looked up at the father of her child, and her best friend. Fuli was ruing everything. Now, her heart was breaking. It was either lose her pride or lose her heart. The tears started flowing.

Oh, wow ... This is a very emotional chapter, and you convey it so powerfully ... I can't believe I'd fallen behind on reading this. O_o

It's hard to believe that Fuli suddenly grew so manipulative, but that's life. Anyone can put up a mask for some amount of time. I just want to see it when her mask shatters around Ajali's father. That would be something much needed.

Fuli is a character in herself. I guess I never fully got to develop her personality early one, but she is very possessive. And so becomes very jealous very easily. When her jealousy rears up, she will do what ever it takes to eliminate the competition. It's just the way she is as she grew up.

*Nods.* I understand that. A character of my own, Mradi, is also manipulative in that same manner. Not quite as blunt, but more subtle and careful about it. But Fuli and Mradi have much in common. I wouldn't be surprised if Fuli chose Mradi's choice of actions, really. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. *Smiles.*
