Umoja: The Story of a Prince

Umoja: The Story of a Prince

Prologue

The sun pulled himself from his warm earthen bed. The first rays flitted across the surface, giving everything in his path an ominous red glow. As the sun pulled his way farther out of his resting place, the colors shifted to a rich orange to a warm yellow to the soothing colors of dawn. The light filled the valley, almost like he was searching for something. The trees stretched towards the rising light, desperate for a drink from the rich sunlight. But still, the sun swept his light across the bowl, bringing dawn to the farthest reaches of the valley.

All across the sun’s path, creatures were shifting about. Some were waking up from the blissful night to embrace the day, others were settling down to sleep to escape the unforgiving sunlight. The trees of the north did a fair job of hiding most of the sun, but the plains of the south warmed up easily and quickly.

At the edge of the jungle, on the eastern side, there was a cliff, separating trees from grassland. The cliff was barren, only home to many caves and rocks and a small pride of lions.

The leader of this pride, Jalil, and his queen, Layla, were already awake. Early last night, Layla had given birth to a single cub, a boy. Today would be the presentation to the pride and to the animals of the kingdom.

As the sun found the pride, animals of all kinds were gathering below the cliff to view the new prince, and future king of their land.

At the top of the cliff, called Juanonea for the color of the great stone at the lip, the elder lioness, Chuki was meeting with the king and queen.

She had seen now five generations, and was greatly respected among the kingdom. She was also the darkest lion in the pride, as was obvious when she picked up the caramel cub in her teeth.

The kingdom suddenly became silent. The winds had died down and the animals turned their attention towards the cliff, waiting for a view of the cub and the ritual in his presentation.

Chuki walked over to the golden stone at the very lip of the cliff. In a dip in the stone a shallow pool with golden flecks resided. The dark lioness jumped up onto the large boulder and placed the cub next to the pool. She looked up towards the heavens and took a deep breath, allowing the spirits of ancestors to return to the golden stone once more. She opened her eyes and looked down at the helpless cub, which was squirming.

She extended her claws and rolled the cub over, exposing his weakest parts. She raised her claw and looked back at the sky.

“Ajali!” she roared as her claws rushed towards the cub and scraped his belly. The young cub squealed in pain as droplets of blood appeared on his caramel-colored pelt.

Quickly, Chuki picked up the bleeding cub and placed him into the pool, where his blood would join that of his pride.

After a few moments, she pulled the cub out of the pool and held him for all the animals to see. Down below, the kingdom broke into an eruption of noise.

Chuki returned the newly named cub to his parents.

“Ajali.” Layla whispered.

“Ajali.” Jalil repeated.

Ajali opened his eyes.

Chapter One

It was another day, as simple at the rest. The sun was once again pulled himself from his bed to watch the Umoja pride, extending his rays onto the earth as he struggled to pass the mountain.

Jalil sat atop Juanonea, watching the sun rise. He was as still as the stones around him, almost becoming one with the land. His honeyed pelt only a few shades difference from mother earth’s children.

The kind was lost in his thoughts, thinking about the last few months. The birth of his son, as well as the birth of the other cubs was a blessing from the kings above. For almost all of them to survive was more than he could ever ask for. Of course the loss of one of Bia’s cubs was a tragedy for the pride, but the four remaining cubs were as healthy as ever.

“Jalil?” Layla hummed as she walked out of the main cave, her deep brown pelt a true contrast against her mate’s.

Finally, the king broke free from his frozen state as he turned to face the beautiful creature next to him. “Good morning, my love.” He purred and nuzzled her affectionately.

Layla returned the warm greeting and entwined her long tail with his. “I just finished getting back from visiting Chuki. She is more than willing to watch all the cubs while the pride goes hunting.”

The honey-colored lion chuckled and licked her cheek. “Go gather the cubs and bring them to Chuki. I will gather the pride.”

With a quick lick, Layla walked back towards the cave. She heard the baritone roar of Jalil as pride assembled. The booming roar sent chills down her spine, making her tail twitch. She picked up to a slow trot as she walked over to the first den in the main cave, Bia’s den.

“Tufani? Fuli?” she chuffed softly.

Two pale cubs awoke from their sleep and looked up at the queen. The female, Fuli yawned and got up quickly, as usual. But her brother rolled onto his side and took a deep breath, more intent on sleeping.

“Tufani! Get up! We have to go!” Fuli hiss as she kicked her twin.

Layla smiled and turned as she went to go find the remainder of the cubs. Soon, Tufani and Fuli were at her heels, heads dipped and near the land of dreams. She flicked her tail over the cubs’ backs, and then turned her attention to another den, the den of Dalilia.

“Ashiki, wake up.” She cooed at the seemingly empty cave.

In response, a wheat-colored lioness cub bounded out of a cave. “Good morning!” her small voice piped.

The pale twins nodded in greeting, but did not give her much thought.

Layla looked around the cave, looking for her son. The caramel bundle was always somewhere new.

“Cubs, help me find Ajali.” She whispered and began looking in some of the dens.

“Ajali?” Tufani called out, looking near an old skeleton.

“What?” The hidden cub asked.

Layla looked around, clearly confused at where her son was. She raised her dark nose to the heavens and sniffed the air, trying to find the familiar earthy scent. Then, she spotted some movement in the corner of her eye.

“Ajali!” she snapped. The prince was in small crevice in the side of the cool cave wall. “Get down from there!”

The caramel-colored feline slipped from his hiding spot and stretched, scraping his dagger-sharp claws against the tough stone floor. He was bigger than the two girl cubs, but the male came close in size.

“I’m here. I’m here.” He purred as he rubbed against his mother’s darker legs as he made his way back to the remaining cubs.

Tufani puffed out his chest as the prince joined them. Despite being only a few days younger than Ajali, he was determined to prove he was an equal. And since he was almost the same size, he was valuable to Ajali’s training.

Ajali paused and looked at Tufani. He narrowed his eyes and smirked. He lowered his chest to the ground, ready to fight. The younger male was taken aback, but he growled and pounced.

The two fought for some time, claws sheathed. It was a full on play fight, brown versus white. Both cubs were equally matched, so it took a swipe from Layla’s soft paws to separate them.

“Boys, come on.” She growled softly and walked out of the cave, four cubs hot on her heels.

While Tufani and Fuli argued over the fight, Ashiki walked next to Ajali for the first time, silently thanking the kings.

*Smiles.* I'm very surprised no one else has commented on your wonderful work thus far, Kmay. It's a great job for your first-ever piece of fanfiction, to say the very least. I'll be looking forward to seeing more, when you update. ^_^

Chapter 2

“Ah! Come in! Come in!” the old lioness purred as she watched the group approach. Her body was barely visible against the blackness of her den.

“Hello, again Chuki.” Layla purred in response as she dipped her head in greeting. “Here are the cubs, a little tired but here.” She laughed.

The four cubs appeared from behind the queen. They quickly joined the old lioness, as if she were a plaything.

“Thanks for taking them. We are desperate for food.” She whispered and took off to join her mate and the rest of the pride.

Chuki watched her go, and then turned back on the four cubs. Her red eyes looked into each one, almost as if she was reading their very soul.

“Now cubs,” she growled with her aged voice, “I believe you are old enough for a very interesting story.”

Ashiki’s ears perked up immediately. She had always been interested in stories. And with this elder lioness in front of her, the story seemed so much more interesting.

The dark lioness chuckled to herself and laid her body onto the softer soil of the den. “Gather around cubs, and I will tell you about the pride I grew up in.”

Fuli and Tufani were almost instantly in front of the lioness. They, like Ashiki, loved a good story. Ajali sat down between the twins and Ashiki.

The wheat-colored female purred softly to herself as the prince sat next to her. Her heartbeat felt like a stampede of elephants across the grass or the rolling thunder during the wet season. She took a deep breath and settled onto her stomach like the others.

“Okay. Now, this is the story of a far-away pride: my home pride.” Chuki began. “You see, there was a powerful king. He was so strong; stronger than any lion I have ever seen. With a thick red mane and a rich golden pelt, he was a sight on the top of the rock we called home. He was a great king, like Jalil.

“Now, before you think that this is a happy story, I am afraid it’s not. But we will get to that later. You see, this king had a son, a rambunctious little thing, always getting into trouble from angering rhinos to running from hyenas. But his father always got him out of trouble.

“One day, I was with the queen. It had been a beautiful day, so we were lounging around. I was only an adolescent then, barely out of my cub years. But we were dozing off when the king’s brother ran up. Apparently the young prince was in a canyon, and the herd of wildebeests had suddenly stampeded, putting the cub in danger. Naturally, the king ran off to save his son, leaving me and the queen full of worry.

“Later, the king’s brother came back telling us that both the king and prince had died in the stampede. It was a horrible loss, but he replaced his brother on the throne and announced that hyenas would live with us. It was a huge change. Hyenas and lions were enemies, as you all know. But soon, all the resources began to diminish. We entered a drought, and all the herds started moving on in search of water.

“The king’s brother was anxious about his reign. He needed a queen, and so he tried to seduce the late prince’s best friend, who was a little younger than I. She refused, but I did not stay much longer. The pride had enough mouths to feed, and I did not want to be next on the mad king’s list for mates, and so I fled my home.

“I know not what came of the pride, but there was little hope when I fled. The lioness the king tried to seduce also fled with me, but at the last minute, she went off in search of help. I know not what came of her either.”

Chuki finished her story and looked at the cubs. The twins were silent, and Ashiki was in tears.

Ajali walked over to the tan cub and allowed her to cry onto his chest. He was a full month older than her, so the small black tuff of fur on his chest was enough to soak up her tears.

“It’s okay.” He purred softly into her ear.

Ashiki sniffled, being so close to him was almost more than she could bear.

Nice reference to Mufasa's time, although I'm rather curious as to why Chuki moved the story along so quickly. But then, they are just young cubs. It's a pretty good chapter, and has some fair character development. ;)

Yeah, she didn't want to make the story too long. The cubs may love a good story, but they can't keep their attention for that long. And she just wanted to get the main points across. Thanks though! :)

The ancient sun once again rose over the old mountain. His everyday struggle to watch the valley was almost complete. He stretched his rays across the land, giving every tree and blade of grass in his bath a rich golden bath. It was the summer solstice. And it was one of the most beautiful days of the year.

Atop Juanonea, the pride was assembled. Today was a big day for the pride, and all eleven of the members were gathered.

All the cubs sat with their parents, and now, since they were all about a year old, the connections were clear. Fuli and Tufani sat with their parents, the off-white Bia and the golden-brown Tumaini. Ashiki sat with her tawny furred mother, Dalilia.

Jalil and Layla were perched atop the golden stone, still in the shadow of the great mountain, with Ajali at the bottom. The king and queen shared loving glances, waiting for Chuki to signal them.

After several moments of talking to Ajali, the dark lioness looked up at the pair and nodded.

Layla stood up. “Now, I know today is a day for Ajali, but we have some very exciting news to share.” The chocolate furred lioness started. “As you all know, our cubs are getting older and starting to enter adolescence. However, we cannot say that for very long. Jalil and I are expecting cubs.”

Before the pride could break out in congratulations, Chuki flicked her tail and began the ceremony.

“As the sun rises on his second solstice, it is time for Ajali, son on Jalil through Layla, to join the ranks of kings by taking a future mate. Jalil, Layla, who have you chosen to lead the pride by your son’s side?”

Ajali looked rolled his eyes. He already knew who his parents had picked, and so he mouthed the name as his parents said it, “Fuli.”

The blonde lioness walked forward and took a seat next to her future mate. Jalil and Layla jumped off the golden stone, lifting the two adolescents up in their place.

“Now, with the glowing of the stone, Ajali and Fuli will take their place as prince and princess. The pair sat on the stone until the aged sun finally pulled himself up to view the entire valley, and lit the golden stone. All across the valley, a silence fell. The sky was empty, and the grassland below froze. The only sound was the roar of the distant waterfall. The pride looked on at their future king and queen.

* * *

Later in the day, the pride had begun their normal routines, and congratulating the pregnant queen. The cubs had managed to escape the heat of summer and fled to the jungle.

Ajali was lying over a moss-covered boulder, looking at his reflection in the pool of water below. He had lost his cub-fat and his mane had started to sprout.

“Maybe I don’t want to be king.” He spat angrily.

“Come on, Ajali.” Fuli purred from a low tree branch above him. “It won’t be all bad.”

The caramel teen turned and looked at the blonde lioness. “Shut up.” He growled, extending his claws. “I don’t want everyone to treat me differently, you know?”

He licked his lips and took in the lioness’s appearance. She was pretty. Her pelt was a rich blonde color and her tail tuft was darker. Her toes were darker than her pelt, matching her tail tuft. His chocolate eyes locked with hers. He expected to feel a connection, but there was nothing. He turned away.

“I just want to be me.” He signed and slipped sideways off the rock. “I could live here forever.”

Fuli jumped from her perch and brushed against the caramel male. “Then let’s.” she purred in his ear.

“Fuli! We don’t need to see that!” Tufani growled. “Come on, Ash.”

The younger male took off running towards the river. Ashiki sighed and looked back at the couple, then ran off after her friend.

“I hate when they do that.” Tufani growled as the female approached him, paused, and then looked at Ashiki with pity. “I’m sorry. I know you hate it, too. If not more.”

“Yeah.” She purred and sat down next to him. “I really do.”

“Well,” he purred as he butted heads with her, “don’t let them get to you. You are beautiful, smart, you have a great personality, and whoever you pick as your mate is the luckiest lion alive.”

“Oh Tufani.” Ashiki purred as she took a playful swat at her friend. He dodged easily and tackled her. She was caught by surprise and tumbled onto the moist dirt ground.

“You’re going to get it now!” she growled and leapt at him. She felt her paws collide with his muscular shoulder, and the rest of her weight hit the lion. They both fell, laughing.

Tufani growled playfully and flipped his blonde bangs out of his face. His white fur was dotted with bits of dirt and moss. He charged at his friend, and she leapt up to meet him. The pair clashed into an embrace, trying to push each other back.

The white male was stronger than Ashiki, but she had managed to get him to stand up straighter, so he was struggling to keep his balance. With his back to the river, the tan lioness gave a final push, hoping to push him into the water.

“Whoa!” Tufani roared and gripped her tightly as he fell back, pulling her with him into the refreshing blue-green water.

Ashiki gasped as the water soaked into her pelt and sent a mock-glare at the white lion. Her blue-grey eyes locked onto his deep blue ones. He sent his familiar lopsided grin at him and she splashed some water at him.

She swam back onto the shore and shook herself out; making sure the last flick of her tail hit Tufani. After shaking most of the water out, she started to groom herself.

A tongue started to groom her back, and she jumped. She looked back to see Tufani looking sheepishly at her. “Don’t want help?” he asked quietly.

She smiled and let him groom her, a soft purr rumbled deep in her throat. She closed her eyes. It was a great feeling to allow her best friend to groom her.

After a few moments, the pair was interrupted by a clearing throat.

Tufani stopped grooming his friend. Ashiki opened her eyes to see Ajali with his head cocked to the side and Fuli behind him, just as confused.

“I’m sorry if I interrupted anything.” Ajali growled cautiously.

Ashiki opened her mouth to answer, but it was Tumani who responded.

“We were fighting, and fell in the river. Just cleaning up after.” He responded happily.

Fuli walked by and flicked her brother with her tail. “Come on, Layla wanted to talk to us about our solo hunt coming up in the next few months.” She purred to her twin.

“Alright, bye Ashiki. Ajali.” He grinned as he started running back to Juanonea.

Fuli brushed past Ajali, giving him a lick on the cheek before sprinting off after the pale lion.

After watching them go, Ajali looked back at the remaining lioness. “You’re sure nothing was going on?” he purred.

“Really, Ajali? You think me and Tufani have something going on? I look at him like the older brother I wish he was.”

“I wish Fuli would see it that way. I don’t want to be her mate. I mean, she’s great and everything. There is just no-“

“Spark.” She finished as the caramel lion allowed himself to collapse onto the ground.

“Yeah. No spark.” He repeated and looked at Ashiki. He made a movement with his head, suggesting the wheat lioness to lie down next to him.

Ashiki took the hint. She circled around the prince and laid her body next to him. The ground was soft here.

He watched as she lay next to him. “I don’t know why. Something about you makes me feel comfortable.” He purred and rested his head upon his paws. He felt her tail flick against his back and he smiled to himself.

“Thanks.” He purred softly.

This is certainly a nice change, Kmay, what with having discontent future mates being chosen. Fuli may appreciate it, but it's an interesting point of view with Ajali wanting someone else. I know it'll lead to some sort of drama later down the road, but, hey, aren't most conflicts started by drama? ;) I'll be looking forward to reading more of your story.

“Ajali, wake up.” A voice boomed, startling the teenager fully awake.

“Dad? Why? It’s too early.” The caramel prince growled, throwing his paws over his eyes.

“You and Fuli are going on patrol with me and Tumaini.”

“Dad…”

“Now, Ajali.” The voice was cold; there was no way to avoid it. The king walked out of the den, not waiting for his son.

Ajali rolled onto his back and stretched. He yawned, ending with a weak roar and licking his lips. He heard footsteps enter the cave, soft and light, definitely a female’s. His ears perked towards the sound. Not heavy enough to be an adult, so it was either Fuli or Ashiki. Then he felt the flick of a tail on his back, followed by an affectionate rub.

“Fuli, I don’t want to go.” He growled and rolled over.

“Listen,” she snarled back, “we’ve been mates-“

“We’re not mates.”

“-for almost three month now, and you treat me like you don’t even care. Now, you are me are going on patrol with our fathers, you are going to look at me like you love me, end of story. Now get up.”

“Whatever.” He hissed and pulled himself up. He flipped his hair tuft out of his eyes and proceeded to walk out of the cave with Fuli at his side, constantly flicked her tail against his.

Soon, the pair had met up with the king and Fuli’s father. The older males had obviously been talking about them, as their conversation became silent when the pair appeared.

“Ready to go?” the younger Tumaini purred.

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” Fuli purred back.

Ajali simple shrugged.

And so the group walked west, away from the pride for the boarder. Jalil and Tumaini walked together in the front. The two lions had been friends for a long time, since they were both cubs. Jalil’s cream pelt was a cool contrast to his friend’s golden pelt.

“It’s a beautiful day.” The brown-maned lion commented.

“A very fine day, indeed.” Jalil responded, taking in the landscape.

“How much longer until the cubs are born?”

“Just about a month and a half.”

“I bet they are going to be handsome! Just like Ajali!” Fuli suddenly piped in.

Jalil laughed full-heartedly. The sound scared a family of ground squirrels back into their burrow.

“Ah, young love.” The old lion chuckled.

Ajali rolled his eyes. He did not want to be here. Obviously the two males wanted to talk to them about something, and were simply stalling.

“What is it you want to talk about?” he spat suddenly.

“Ajali!” Jalil growled, and then sighed. “Fine. Tumaini, let’s head over to that hill. We can talk to them there.”
The four quickly climbed the small hill and sat down. The maned lions were sitting calmly in the grass, Ajali climbed up onto a dead log in a successful attempt to escape Fuli, who was lying under him.

The sun was barely peaking over the mountain before Jalil let out a sigh.

“Alright, so, as you both know, you two are going to rule the pride someday.” He started. “And you must learn how to do so. Of course, that will come naturally. However, there is another matter we need to discuss.” Finishing the statement, the king looked at his friend, signaling it was his turn to speak.

“Well, Fuli, Ajali, there is the issue of continuing the pride.” Tumaini purred.

“What?” the two teenagers gasped. Both had an expression of disbelief. However, Ajali seemed rather angry, while Fuli seemed pleased.

“When you two are older, you must continue on with the generations. You must have cubs of your own.” Jalil explained. “And we-“

“I’ve had enough.” Ajali snarled. He leapt down from his perch, and without looking back, ran towards Juanonea. He could feel his fury surging through his veins, pumping his adrenaline, and pushing him farther. He kept running, past the cave, past the pride, past his mother, past Tufani.

“Ajali?” He heard a voice call. He paused for a moment and looked to his right, towards the edge of the cliff. It was Ashiki.

She had seen him running towards the cliff. Her grey-blue eyes were filled with concern. They lock onto his for a moment, and his pain was clearly visible to her. There were tears in his eye, ready to roll once he was alone.

“Ajali…” she repeated as he took off again. She watched him disappear into the jungle. She knew where he was going. The wheat colored lioness looked at the rest of the pride. Tufani tipped his head in the prince’s direction, confirming her decision.

She picked herself up and ran after him, her heart breaking to see him like that.
