What I See (Short story)

The moon was shining over the peaceful savannah. Most of the animals were asleep by now, but one Lioness was still awake. That Lioness was Kikai.

The dark Lion walked through the short grass, until she got to the watering hole. She turned around to see if anyone was watching her. She couldn't see, or hear anyone. Everything was quiet and serene.

Kikai sat down and looked at her reflection. Her reflection showed a normal Lioness, but that's not what she actualy saw. She saw a freak, a hybrid...A monster. That's all she could see, instead of the reflection of a beautiful Lioness.

She suddenly heard some heavy footsteps and quickly looked behind her. There was no one there.

"Hey." Said a young male voice, coming from the left side.

Kikai looked to the left and saw Ritoru, her best friend.

"Oh...Hi." Kikai said in a depressed tone.

Ritoru picked up on the tone of her voice. She didn't sound happy at all.

"What's wrong?" Ritoru asked, in a concerned tone.

Kikai looked straight into his deep green eyes, then looked at the water. She didn't know if she should tell him or not. If he knew....Would he still like her?

The Lioness let out a deep sigh.

"Ritoru, I....Today I found out that...Well...My father was a Panther...I'm not the normal Lioness you thought I was....I'm a cross-breed, a mongrel...A hybrid." Kikai replied to Ritoru's question.

"So am I." Ritoru replied.

Kikai looked straight into his eyes again.

"I know....But...."

"But?.."

Kikai sighed.

"But when I look at you...I see a Lion...But when I look at myself...I just see an ugly monster." Kikai replied.

Ritoru smiled.

"Well, you know what I see? I see a beautiful Lioness." Ritoru replied.


"Really?" Kikai asked him. She smiled and started to blush. "Thank you." Kikai said in a happier tone.

She liked his right cheek. Ritoru started to blush too.

"Uhhh....Well, I better go back to the den...." Ritoru said in a nervous tone.

He walked away, then stopped and looked at Kikai.

"See ya tomorrow." Ritoru added.

He continued to walk back to Pride Rock.
