Even Sarabi’s keen eyes had trouble picking up anything worth chasing. Only stragglers from the main herds remained even so far out from Pride Rock. Some were sick or boney; it would take more energy to drag the carcass back home than the meat would provide. Rodents disappeared immediately into their tunnels at the lioness’ approach. Finally, out of breath from her long run, Sarabi slowed to take a breather. As air pumped in and out of her gasping mouth and nose she picked up a scent that had eluded her before: a fresh kill. Knowing that Sarafina had probably picked up on the same thing, Sarabi followed it without comment. Before long they came across a group of three hyenas clustered around a zebra that they had obviously just killed. It was a surprisingly fit kill, and would certainly feed both lionesses with meat to spare to bring back in secrecy to Pride Rock.
Sarabi didn’t recognise the hyenas from Scar’s horde, and so felt reasonably safe that they would not be discovered if they chased the hyenas off their kill, and Sarabi very much doubted that they would get any better opportunity to feed their friends. Still, the idea of sinking to the level of scavengers offended her on principle. She looked to Sarafina, needing her friend’s opinion before she acted.
