I think my cat is pregnant and I seriously need some advice!

Postby thanigraphics » May 9th, 2010, 9:36 pm

My cat Fluffy is pregnant, I think. :D
Her belly has grown and it even seems something's "moving" inside her belly. This wednesday I'm taking her to the vet for check-up to be sure if she's pregnant and ask for advice about kitten care, feeding and stuff.

Does anyone have experience with cats having a litter of kittens? Do they need help with feeding, what if one of the youngsters is ill, and what if Fluffy doesn't want to take care of them?
It really feels like I'm going to be a mummy myself! But I'm worried too.... these kittens have to get the best there is!
And I'm going to have a HAAAARD time when I have to say goodbye and find new owners for them..

I read about it in DA... though I don't own cats, and I know nothing about them
But good luck, and I hope you find some great owners for the kittens :cool2:

I'd leave advice like that up to the experts ^.^ The vets can tell you what's best for your kitty, and I hope she has a healthy litter =)

well, I haven't actually had one that's been pregnant, but I've been around my relative's mother cats. and I've read far too many books on cats.

make sure to provide her with several clean, dry, soft places to kit. usually where you want them to have kittens they won't actually use lol, so it's best to make sure she has plenty of options. you may want to block her from going under beds as that can make it very difficult on you. they tend to like boxes with blankets, your laundry basket (lol), and sometimes even a favorite pet bed. just make sure it's really easy for her to climb into but still safe for the kittens. also give her plenty of access to food and water and keep a litterbox nearby. just make sure you don't put the litterbox too close to her food or her kitting box, cats are very clean creatures and she'll search out a different location.

generally, the mother cat knows just what to do in caring for her kittens. she'll frequently visit them to allow them to nurse and lick their bellies so they can pee (they need that motion on their abdomen). if she doesn't appear to be staying with them enough, you may have to encourage her and put her with them yourself.

for the first few weeks, you're going to have to resist the urge to pet them. if the kittens get too much human scent on them, the mother will likely move them to a different location or even abandon them. you can handle them sparingly once they start moving around a good bit. at about 4 weeks you can start petting them up a bit more to start establishing a bond. the kittens can be weaned from the mother's milk from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. this depends on when the mother feels the need to wean them. sometimes they won't put much effort in to weaning them though lol. start them off with canned wet food first, you might need to smear a little on their lips or nose so they'll lick it and get a taste for it (they don't realize it's food just yet). once they start getting bigger you can give them just kitten chow or alternate between that and canned food. the kitten chow phase usually doesn't last long as they'll get big enough to eat the bigger kibble shortly and tend to prefer the taste. oh, and usually around 9 days old the kittens will start opening their eyes. don't get worried if they seem to be having trouble getting them open or only one eye is open, after a day or so they'll have them both open just fine.

if she does abandon a kitten, there's a chance that there could be something wrong with it that she can sense. but if she won't take care of any kittens, you'll have to step in. you'll need to buy a bottle just for tiny kittens or use a small dropper to feed it. most cats are actually lactose-intolerant and cow's milk is too strong on a young animal's stomach, so you'll have to find a milk replacement for cats to use. some places even have them especiallly formulated to young kittens. as mentioned before, they have to have a stroking motion on their abdomen to urinate, so you'd have to do that gently with a finger. you'll have to keep the kitten(s) in a box with towels or small blankets and keep a hot water bottle in there to simulate their mother's body heat. there might even be a stuffed cat that can simulate breathing and a heartbeat to comfort them. it's unlikely it'll come to this, but in the case that it does you'll be extremely busy for 6 weeks. just don't panic yet, most cats are excellent mothers and you won't have to take care of the kittens yourself.

if the kittens do happen to get a lot of matter around their eyes or they're eyes get like glued shut and they're kinda wheezy, then they've gotten a respiratory infection (the cat version of the common cold). in adult cats, this isn't anything to worry about and they get better on their own. but with kittens it can become serious. my own dear sweet Elvis had this, as did his whole litter, when we got him from a friend. you'll need to get medicine from the vet to treat it. just make sure you get the oral liquid for it, not the ointment to put on their eyes. our friend only used the ointment and the rest of the kittens died. while we gave Elvis the liquid and he made a full recovery, despite being the runt of the litter. just keep an eye out for anything that seems to be wrong with the kittens and consult a vet about it.

lol, clearly I've rambled along long enough. I recommend you try to study up on this sorta stuff yourself too. and if you have any more questions about anything, I'll see if I can help any more :)

Well, thanks! This wednesday I am taking her to the vet for a check-up and to see how far she is in pregnancy, and if she will need the presence of a vet when she gives birth. I'm really nervous but looking forward to everything. My aunts cat had several litters and she gives me advice all the time :) I'll keep you guys up if I know more!
I'm so proud of my little girl! :dreamy:

Awww that's wonderful! :) I don't really have any words of advice since I've never had to deal with a mother cat giving birth, but congrats to your kitty and I hope the kittens are born healthy ^^
