Being pretty much forced to be supportive of Trump has taught me a lot of things, and well, a lot of it was more positive than one would think.
The racism, the sexism, the homophobia, that wasn't what made Trump popular. It contributed, definitely, but what made him popular is he spoke to the middle class. I am part of the middle class, and we are struggling. Obamacare screwed us out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The older, working class people already had inexpensive insurance that covered 100% of medical costs, but Obamacare messed that up. Insurance companies had to make cutbacks because of it, which meant insurance rates went up and no longer covered 100%, which meant people now faced
hefty medical bills if they got sick. And the media largely ignored this problem that affected a lot of people. It's no wonder people felt so disenfranchised and latched onto someone who wanted to repeal Obamacare. There are others who were tired of career politicians and voted Trump because he was something different. And some who liked his policies.
..And yeah, about those policies, some of them are
very freaking good. Such as wanting to pull our jobs out of foreign factories and bring them back here. Factories that, might I add, sometimes employ child labor, and lack a lot of the anti-pollution policies we have in place here. And Trump wants tax cuts for the middle class, at a time in which we need them (see Obamacare debacle above).
So when you consider all of that, and consider that a Hillary presidency is probably a scarier prospect (did a lot of people forget the no-fly zone over Syria thing? That would have more than likely than not have gotten us into a war with Russia. I know deportation under Trump is scary and would cost lives, but holy hell, a war would cost so many more) it becomes clear that no, most Trump voters aren't racist, homophobic, etc. Half of America is not those things, just a loud and admittedly dangerous minority of Trump's supporters. But a minority nonetheless. Many of them decried the awful things Trump said, and I think many kept in mind that we have checks and balances in our government, so it'll hopefully be hard to do anything with that awful talk. So relax, America doesn't really hate you.
