Day off tomorrow. Going to attempt to get the bulk of my Christmas shopping done. Already know what my parents and my god-daughter want, so really just need to find something for my sister and my little neice.

You know honestly those people who want to move to Canada because of the election I say go for it. It makes room for more jobs for people here anyway. :P

I wonder: what does everyone here think about the electoral college?

This is the second election out of the past five in which the electoral college elected someone who did not win the popular vote. This has caused many people to want the electoral college abolished.

Others say the electoral college is good to have because it gives the lesser-populated states more power. They feel that the democratic nominee would always win without this system in place, due to how democrat-filled states with a high population, such as California and New York, are.

I personally feel like this system needs some sort of reform. I'm not sure exactly what kind of reform, but as a Californian, it's very disheartening to know, had I gone and voted for Hillary like I wanted to, she still wouldn't be president. Not for lack of barely eeking the popular vote win, but because officials in another state, who I have no say in who gets elected there, picked Trump.

But, what are your thoughts?

^I'm not American, but I honestly agree with you. Just like you said, it's just discouraging to know that, in the end, the popular vote doesn't have as much meaning as it is made believe. It's not a matter of being dissatisfied with the chosen candidate, but with the fact that someone else's vote is, in a way, above a "regular person's" vote, due to their position (in this case, an official). I just don't believe it's a fair system.

I can promise you that without a system such as the electoral college and you have pure popular vote there will be civil war eminent. When you look into the Electoral College as a whole its really a compromise so that larger states still get more power based on their population, but smaller states still get what they want as well which is a set number of votes for each state. Similar to how the Senate and the House are set up. If it was done solely on the popular vote and the margin for victory was the 0.02% that was Hillary's victory it wouldn't end well for the country in the long run. Ever heard the phrase, "The South will rise again?" With a government that is entirely left win you'd have a split in this country eventually. Without balance you will have division.
