How can you NOT know that human rights are far worse there compared to the West?

I understand that recruiters of radical groups seek out people at their lowest points and/or who "feel wronged by their society" and the like, but how can you not know all that before making such a decision?? How do you feel that killing innocent people is going to help your situation??

Stuff like this makes me really interested in studying psychology just to know what the hell goes on in people's heads.
