Okay, looks like I should do the Windows 8 Refresh, then spend the day reinstalling my programs, after all I can play AC4 while I wait, or something. *shrugs* Since I can't get a hard drive to backup my files anyway, I need to go ahead and see if I can fix windows so I can upgrade to 8.1.
