I don't care who you are, if you're not me or my significant other, then you can't define my relationship...

It's not pointless to me..

From my experience I would say that long distance relationships are actually stronger relationships for that very reason :)
I'm kind of lucky that my girlfriend doesn't live "that" far away (it's about an hourish, maybe just less than an hour but including the return journey it's two hours or so of travel per visit). We see each other at least once a week, sometimes just over that and sometimes just less than that (rotas and free time not withstanding). But I still feel as strongly about it all when we are apart as I do when we are together and I think it takes a strong bond between two people to maintain that and really the longer you can keep up with that just goes to prove how right you two probably are for each other.

That's my two cents... Or two pennies, as it were.

Thanks.. that's my experience so far, too. Obviously it would be bad to NEVER have any physical aspects, but for me the point of a relationship is to have someone who loves and supports you, and honestly, I get more love and support from overseas than I have ever gotten here. It's more important to me to know that someone cares out there, and even though I am impatient to be closer and I do hate the distance, I would never trade what I have for some local mook.. The emotional aspect is what's most important to me.

The common belief is that people do not act the same way on the internet as they do in real life, so the relationship is "fake." That's generally the reason.

Although, in my experience, that isn't really true. If you meet someone in person who you've known online, they're still the same person. It's weird at first, but then after a few minutes, it's like you've known them for years. Then it's like "yep, I knew you would say that."

People do act different on the internet, but that's because social rules are less obstructive. As such, qualities of character become much more apparent online, so in all reality, the opposite is true from what most people claim.

Yes, I am a different person on here than I am in real life. But in real life, only a few people really even know me at all, outside of context.

Yep, most people aren't a lot different if you actually really know them, except that they're usually more comfortable with themselves online. Plus, going on video forces people to act more like they do in person, so it's not like you can't "meet" them before meeting them.

In this case, my mother gets that most people aren't drastically different cos you can do things like Skype and it's hard for them to keep up an act, so there were no comments like that. My sister was complaining of her lack of a relationship and I told her to put herself out there more and be more available, and maybe try online since she hates people who are all "MURIKA;" then suddenly she and my mom both were criticizing my relationship because, as I said already, they say it's not real because I "can't even get a hug." :/

Gee, thanks guys, I hadn't noticed that, and I totally don't see people criticizing my relationship enough anyway.

You will, it might take time, but you will as long as you don't give up.

^ I agree with this. I don't think that the majority of people act drastically different then they are in real life. I remember this conversation a while back ago, somebody asked "Why do you have different personality around different people?" Its not that we act differnt, insted that we all have different comfort zones with different people. So I think its fine to have a online or long distance relationship, people will always show there true self if you give them some time!

^ All I know about online relationships is that they have a higher chance of failure, but that's about it.

I don't know why, but the music I am listening to right now (stuff from Uru: Ages Beyond Myst) really makes me feel like I am in Africa for some reason. Could be because I ended up looking up about the Kenyan railroad system earlier today, but still...

I think long ditance/onlien relationships are alright as ong as you can visit the other person once a week, or at least twice a month, I know some cases that actually work, even with longer time in distance, but those platonic, impossible relationshps should be just aborted as anoption, they are very likely to fail. otherwise you'll have a bag of repressed feelings with you.

My gf and I live in different countries, and we have been together for 9 months without having been able to meet up yet. It's tough not being in the same place, but we have a real connection and we both intend to rectify that issue. In theory I'll be spending three weeks with her in the summer (when we can both be free of school and work long enough for it to work), and in theory each summer after that we will repeat that process until we can converge.

I do agree that a lot of long-distance relationships do in fact fail, but those are too focused on the physical and not enough the emotional, I think. I mean, if you truly love someone it doesn't matter how long you're apart, you will still be loyal to that person, and in general, most relationships, long-distance or not, do in fact fail because there is not real love from both people in them.

Can I say for sure that mine will last forever? No, I can't. But I can say that I highly doubt it won't work, because we two have a real connection that was there before we got together and would still be there at this point whether we had decided to be a couple or not.

What determines if a relationship will work or not is if both people love each other and if both people try to make it work. Other factors are pretty much irrelevant from my standpoint.
