What game?

I wish I had time to play games during the weekend, and the money to buy new games on a frequent basis.

I assume you've already tried resetting the router and reconfiguring it?

What's the manufacturer and model of your router? Since it's not working properly, I bet it's a Belkin. Those things are pieces of turd.

No I haven't reset or reconfigured the router because no one would listen to me that we needed to do that and kept trying to come up with other things.

My dad called AT&T to talk to them about it, but he didn't tell them the problem is that the router's security type is set to "Shared- WEP" and I can't set my network properties to that security type on the new laptop, so after the tech asked the same questions over and over, he told us he didn't know what the problem was. I just needed to find out if changing our router's settings might make hard-to-fix problems for all the other computers in the house, but of course he didn't talk to the tech about that at all. So then the tech said to call my laptop's manufacturer and ask them... as if THEY would know why the internet doesn't work.

All I know about the router is that it's 2WIRE.

My mom asked me not long ago if I've tried troubleshooting, and I had to tell them for about the fiftieth time that when I do that it tells me to connect an ethernet cable to fix the problem, and after that she said tomorrow we'll change the router settings and see what happens.

If they would have listened to me, this problem might have been solved by now. :annoyed:

Nei specific game, just it's generally much more fun playing with a friend, and watching videos of people derping around having loads of fun makes me wish I could do the same, but that seems unlikely to happen.. :/

Tell them to STFU and listen to the voice of reason, because this is absolutely ridiculous.

  1. This is very obviously not your laptop's problem, if it can connect via an Ethernet cable.
  2. Do not use WEP security. It is very outdated technology, and very unsecure.
  3. Windows 8 has no native capability to connect to WEP secured networks for that reason. The OS doesn't support it.

You need to go into your wireless router's configuration settings and change WEP to WPA or WPA2, or remove security completely (not recommended). There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You're never going to be able to get it to work until you do that. This is not a matter of debate or troubleshooting or whatnot. This is a simple fact.

Find the router and hard reset it, by pushing the physical reset button.

After you've done that, wait about 10 minutes for the router to reset itself, and then type 192.168.1.254 in your web browser's address bar, from a computer with a wired connection to the router. Try using the name admin and then 2wire or Wireless for the default password. You should change that to something you remember as soon as you get in, if it doesn't automatically prompt you to do so.

Then, you should be free to adjust everything as needed. You will have to reconnect all the other computers, but that's not terribly hard to do. Some old devices may not be able to connect to a WEP network, but we're talking really old, because WEP was considered obsolete and insecure back in 2004.

If nobody believes me, print this post out and tape it to the refrigerator. Claim that it is from the internet Gods, and explain that they are blocking your internet access as your punishment for not using WPA.

I told my mom "my computer genius friend said to do this."

And she reluctantly said alright. So we should get it fixed tomorrow then.
