Of course! It all makes sense now! The Avengers is actually a metaphor for 12/21/12! Think about it!
You have the predictions about the end of humanity,
The ones who saw it coming,
The ones who ignored it,
And the ones who were never told.
The end of the world comes and brings with it a new order for the world, and Nick Fury even says "Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on."
This a symbolic for those who believe there is life after doomsday, and that the world will spin until it has been taken out of our hands. That predictions cannot be believed.
Which means...
On the 21st, the Avengers are gonna come and fight off an alien breakout! The Hulk is gonna go smashing through buildings, and Thor is gonna...! LIGHTNING STUFF!
