Honestly back then I didn't really have money. 
Wasnt till about 5 or so years ago did things really pick up. I remember having to share a TV that was really old and was in the living room.

We had one TV with no service. We read books and played the video games of the day (which were like, $5 new), and if we watched anything, it was VHSs, most of which my grandparents gave us.
Even so I was exposed to the popular things.
