^Same reason "Know" has k... English.
Its also because, the English language has at least 40 different spoken sounds, and only 26 letters. Because we do not have a letter that is literally pronounced as "Ka" We do not pronounce it "Ka-no" but as "No" with a silent k representing the different context and missing pronunciation, that we know it is a different word but it is still spoken the same way. Taking that example and applying it to "Island" you can see the same problem, we have no "Is" letter in our language, hence the silent "S" in the word.
It is largely due to English being a descendant of Latin, and the best example of that would be "Son" vs "Sun", its the same word but the different letters are the only thing stopping me from kissing my son goodnight, or kissing the sun good night (which would probably be pretty warm, to say the least.)
"WHY DID I EVEN JUST BOTHER TO TYPE ALL THAT, I AM BORED AND TIRED AND OMG I NEED BED"
"Ever get the that feeling where you are so tired, you do not even have energy to go to bed with?"
