Did Scar Love Zira?

It's always been a question in my mind.

Of course, I know Zira wasn't in the boiling pot when they made The Lion King, but it does seem rather odd that Scar would rely solely on the hyenas to do his dirty work, rather than the INSIDE advantage of Zira and his pack of "followers". And, of course, Scar has never shown affection or love towards anything, and has always seemed to be out for himself.

Zira seems pitifully obsessed with him, doing EVERYTHING (even after his death) for Scar's benefit or wishes. She's more like a dedicated follower than anything close to a love interest.

Could Scar's intention when mating with Zira (if he even did at all - it was never proved) have been producing an heir, and nothing else? Of course in the end, he chose Kovu, but could he have originally wanted a full-blooded prince, and needed a lioness to act as his "queen" to do so?

All I'm saying is that Scar's always been a loner. Him being close to ANYONE kind of seems out of character to me.

This post is mostly speculation:
My theory is that Scar and Zira were once lovers, but Scar quickly ended the relationship after he discovered that Zira had been cheating on him. Nuka would have been Scar's son but Vitani and Kovu were another lion's offspring. Scar realized his own son was weak, so he chose little Kovu to be his heir, despite Zira's betrayal. After her betrayal, I think Zira would have become a bit psychotic trying to gain Scar's trust back while Scar wanted nothing to do with her. She would have been a thorn in his side. After Scar's death, Zira would become more and more psychotic, as we see in SP (I truly believe she was a normal lioness once, haha).

Yes, being close to Zira seems out of character for Scar, but I believe he was a normal lion just like Mufasa at one time. It might have interested him to have some company.

And I know there are some issues with that theory, but its quite hard to make SP match up with the original film.

I don’t think Scar loved Zira. His character is portrayed as extremly power-hungry and cynical. I think that when he became king, the darkness in his soul consumed him completly, and he lost all ability to love anyone. He just became mad with power..

I think Scar could have mated with Zira as an attempt to produce an heir, and maybe this led Zira to believe that he loved her. There’s certainly no doubting Ziras love for Scar, but I personally don’t think that love was mutual.

I'd really like to think that Taka actually did love Zira, although as stated above, it's impossible to know this for sure. ^^ I really do think both Taka and Zira were capable of feeling love at one point or another but I'm sure their relationship was a lot more complex than we could probably imagine. ^^ After reading COTP, I just feel a little more sympathy towards Taka, so I give him the benefit of the doubt and say he did love Zira, just in his own twisted and ingenious sort of way.

I believe that Scar did love Zira at some point. They couldn't of had cubbies for no reason, if they didn't love each other. Scar must have found out that Zira mated with another lion, and then got mad at her. But to choose Kovu as his heir. Just as Moka said. Zira does show a little guilt of loosing Scar in SP. As she states: "Scar, watch over my poor Nuka." and after she whaps Kovu in his face, she says "You've betray us outlanders... BETRAY SCAR!" Something among those lines. Anyways, she keeps mentioning Scar in SP, so I am assuming she misses him. So yeah, I believe they were once lovers. ^^

This is such a tricky issue because everything we hear about it comes from such unreliable sources. Almost entirely Zira in fact, and Zira was clearly slightly disturbed. I don't think it's very far fetched to say that she imagined it all. It's too bad we never see them in a scene together, though I guess they're together now lol...

I think Zira and Scar had a great foudation for a realtionship.Kill Simba but instead die and be in evey single lion king fan fiction artwork from that day on.

The more I've thought about it over the years the more I like to think that there wasn't much love there on Scar's end, but I don't have anything but pure speculation to back this up. We never saw them in a scene with each other, so it's hard to know either way. We can only go off of what Zira felt and like Mike said, Zira didn't seem to be wholly right in the head, and love can just go one way. I guess the Scar I envision from what we saw in the movies doesn't seem very capable of true intimacy to me. He's power-hungry and would possibly do anything to continue his legacy, to boot. I think that's where Zira and, subsequently, Nuka came in. Wanting to produce an heir.

I think Zira was as obsessed with Scar, as Scar was indeed with becoming king. Zira was also very focused on power too, but she surely was insanely in love with Scar.
I think the only relation Zira had with Scar, was that he was the father of one or more of her cubs.
