Question about Simba and Mufasa.

Question about Simba and Mufasa.

Postby loydle » November 30th, 2009, 4:34 am

Apparently, Simba's problem in the movie is that he forgot who he was, and he could never live up to Mufasa.

Is this why (and I think this is true) adult Simba seems to be smaller in stature compared to Mufasa?
Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?
Is it actually because Simba wasn't finished growing in the first movie?
If so, can you notice a difference in size in the sequel?

Maybe Mufasa was designed to be a bit larger to reflect his role as a wise fatherly figure.

I know this is silly to think about; I guess it's just curiosity.

It's not a silly querie. Just slightly difficult to answer as I'm not sure.

I think one of the reasons why Simba is smaller in stature compared to Mufasa is that he has lived mostly off on bugs and not meat and also it could well be that Simba can be viewed as a young adult whilst Mufasa was an adult.

As for the sequel, I can't answer that. I feel that Simba though now an adult is much larger than he was in the first film..I don't think he has reached (yet) the full size of Mufasa.

I think it's simply because Mufasa is older and has lived a very good life, whereas Simba isn't fully grown and lived on a diet of bugs.

Though I think it could be to do with symbolism ^^

You've inspired me to draw Simba as a fully grown adult :P as big as Mufasa!
Good question ^^

Yep, I considered the bug diet as a factor too.

But I wonder what factors the animators took into consideration though.

Well Mufasa was supposed to be a large and powerful lion to begin with... that could be another factor. :P I think in the sequel the animators tried to make Simba just as large as Muffy but they ended up making him fat lol.

Probably not alot of thought via the animators regarding Simba's size. As Simba lived throughout most of his life on bugs, really he ought to be much skinner (maybe even skinner than Scar is). -Don't think the animators took consideration over that factor either.;)

on the second disk of the TLK SE, the animators said that they wanted to exaggerate Mufasa's stature to make him look more powerful. so if you think about it, Simba is really just the average lion size. I don't think they ever meant to make him as big as Mufasa, as that's part of their unique character designs much like how Sarabi is bigger than many of the lionesses.

I'll watch that 'journey' again sometime soon and see if they mentioned why they wanted Simba to be smaller.

I think Simba wasn't fully grown at the end of the first movie. I think, if you compare the ages of Mufasa and adult Simba with humans, Mufasa would be like 35 years old, and adult Simba in the first movie was like 20 years old. I think the animaters wanted to give Mufasa a more mature look, because in the movie he is the wise father figure and "the king".
Later in the movie, Simba still looks up to his father, I think they made Mufasa more muscular built to give an accent to that relationship, Simba still feels the way he felt as a small cub in the ghost-scene, Mufasa is the wise father and adviser.

In SP, you see a more mature Simba, and his built resembles more to Mufasas. I think, in this sequel, Simba is a few years older too.

(strange thing is, the scene where Kiara is presented to the animals of the kingdom as a cub, is ment to be the same as the ending scene of the first movie. But Simba looks way more mature at the beginning of SP)
