Yes, Disney promoted the film as being the first Disney animated film to not be an adaptation from an existing story.

From what I've read, there was the occasional Disney guy working on The Lion King who said "oh yeah, this is our Kimba story". But really, what it comes down to is that I think is that those who worked on the movie and saw Kimba might have seen a few similarities here and there, but at the end, the "The Lion King is a Kimba rip-off" is just pure conspiracy: taking lackluster evidence, ignoring anything contradictory, and spouting off inflammatory statements.
