I believe the small lion in the background is an adult lioness, certainly not a cub. Perhaps an adolescent lioness. The cub in the foreground is most likely Nala.

I really wish it was Mheetu, but as it has been pointed out, he was cut very early in production. It probably was Nala. Let's face it, when Disney animates these scenes they don't expect people to look too closely, well except for us TLK fans who love all the little details . The only other cub we see in the movie is Nala. The other cubs only exist in the comics, which doesn't mean Disney follows those.

Not to mention that the comics didn't exist when they were making this film, DUH, so of course it was either Nala or some random cub. But probably Nala because why would they bother to draw a random cub when they coulld just as well draw Nala as they were to show her later anyway. And as it has been pointed out, they messed up the lions toe colours in many scenes + they wouldn't bother to worry about correct toe colours in a scene where the cub is shown for like three seconds.

I find it silly people are trying to force Mheetu into the film even though they know he was CUT OUT in early production. Not to mention how those remaining scetches show he was intented as a much younger cub than the one we see in the den. I mean, really, using common sense doesn't hurt before making assumptions!
