She still wanted to be an adventursome cub and develop her own identity rather than be forced into acting a certain way because she was the princess.

That's kinda what I thought she meant. Although it surprises me that she would have thought that at such a young age.

I mean, even I don't really understand the whole concept of a personal identity. Much less so when I was just a kid.

Figuratively however, the remark also serves to foreshadow Kovu being her other half as an adult.

I can't believe I never realized this.
