The Member Dens

Re: The Member Dens

Okay, so one, putting them into the den? That place has way to much stuff in it. Maybe make a whole separate board for that?
Two, how many of those 2,000 some odd members are actually active?
Three, I agree with KM and FM. I really think member dens should be kept for deserving members. I just think it's better that way.

And if it is all put into one board, can everyone on the site use it?

Would have put more but using a phone.

Fip, I wasn't attacking you and neither was AdAstra. We're just expressing our opinions. ^^

I guess that it is a little unfair to the members who already have dens. That's a good point. I don't think it's a huge deal, but if those members do feel otherwise then... I don't know. Moka's a pretty fair and level headed individual; if somebody comes up with a solution I'm sure he'd listen. ^^

As for the staff forum, having been on the staff do you think it would function better if it had no place to discuss anything and just operated as team of complete individuals (I'm assuming the staff discuss board matters in the staff forum, which is what people usually do xD) who did everything independently of each other? :3

I don't typically like using this kind of metaphor, but that's like saying, "all members aren't equal. why can't EVERYONE view Moka's ACP and make changes to the board?" Being staff, you have different privileges and responsibilities and one of those happens to be discussing things in the staff forum. :3

If I'm wrong about any of that, please let me know, because I'm sure you do know more about how the staff operates than I do. ^^

I really do not see what this staff forum has to do with anything, I assume it's only for discussing important things regarding the forum? How is that unfair? =/ The staff have a job to do, you know. A very important one as well.
Thanks for the valuable lesson in how the staff operate, I only just recently quit my position on the staff last week, what would I know?
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. I was just assuming that the staff forum is used to discuss important matters, in which case it is very much different from the member dens etc., and not something that makes the board unequal.

Ya, the staff place should stay just that: A staff place. So regular members not having access is perfectly fair. It's not like us regular members r moderating this forum. But taking away the member rooms is a little unfair, mainly because the people who got the dens really do deserve them.

Yes, there are a lot of people on this forum, but how many are actually active? And then, how many are frequent posters who post meaningful things? Really, even if all 2,000 members were active, it would still be a bad idea. There would just be to many threads. It'll just create more work for the moderators if everyone can post their own ask and chat threads. The members who have the dens should keep their dens, at the very least. They earned them. People can rant and cry all they want, but the bottom line is that there are some members who deserve the rooms, some who don't. Simple as that.

Isn't just letting them have dens making it even more exclusive?

Then again, just taking away all the dens just creates even more threads because as far as I can understand everyone can post in this new board. So deserving and non deserving members would be posting. And that would probably just create a whole lot of spam as well. Personally, I'd just give out all the dens you need to over a long period of time. And maybe ask another member or two to be a moderator to keep up. Doesn't hurt to have more help around a forum, right? ^^
This is one step in a little bit of revamping that we're doing. We actually will be having forums for more specific discussions and splitting up the den a little bit, but it will be better and more concise than how it was in 2009. And, obviously, it will be better than it is now.

We'll probably do something like this:
- The Den
--- The Extraordinary Events
--- The Arcade
- Personal (Ask me topics and everything personal/RL stuff goes in here)
--- Member Birthdays
- Entertainment (Games, sports, movies, TV, music, books, etc)
- Graphics Forum
- Off-Topic Links

Anything think of more forums?

The member dens aren't really a cause of spam in my opinion. But members should post because they want to post, not because they want to get a member den. Also, as the community gets bigger, it gets tougher and tougher for the mods to keep track of deserving members, and it becomes a guessing game when it's time to choose the next member to receive a den.

Guise relax, it's an internet forum. We got this.

If the website explodes you can blame me, it was my idea.
I think you guys missed this post, it already says that the forum is most likely going to be re-organized, and so being crowded won't be an issue. Honestly, it's not that big of a deal, as said before. If you want your ask me threads, you can place them convieniently in the correct boards when the time comes.

Also, the staff forum and the member dens are a different issue. Staff are only supposed to see the staffroom, as if it were open everytime one of the staff said something abotu someone, total chaos would break out. Every forum has a staff room, but not every forum has Member Dens. In fact, I've only see it on a very small number of forums, and it really wasn't all that typical of a thing to have. I'm sure Moka will still be giving out the emails/domain space if people still really want it. :P

I think in turn, this would also allow for more sections to be made, that will bring new and more exciting features onto this forum. The dens at this point are just taking up room, which can be used for other sections that would be more enjoyful, then something just for a few certain people.

Also, I like the idea of the current evens/News section, but really the members would have to be mature enough to accept that other peoples opinions might be different from theirs. :P

Maybe it could have a special set of rules or a reminder like The Arcade?

Yes, I'm stalking this thread.

You know what? Ultimately I don't have a den nor do I hang out in them, so I guess I don't really have the right to argue one way or another. :3

-If- dens are removed, perhaps there could be some other reward for great members? Perhaps the equivalent of the 'elite' member group many other forums have? Just trying to think of ideas.

I think reorganizing the den is a great call, and I think I'll leave it at that. ^^

Still, there are members who earned their dens. They would lose their dens, right?

And I don't think I'm understanding this correctly. So everyone can post like personal stuff and such or just people who already have a den?

I don't have a den but I still have the right to express my opinions about this. :P I don't think I even deserve a den honestly. 0_o
