I had thought about of that also, while a preschool show would not even want to hint at romance in any way. It runs in his family to have a close friend of the opposite gender, although it also runs in his family that said friend becomes a future love internist. Although I think it could be possible for Kion to meet a lioness cub in a future episode of The Lion Guard, she could be from another pride. It would be very interesting to see what kind of interactions Simba's Pride has with other Lion Prides that they are not adversarial toward. Another thought that had occurred to me is that we don't know the genders of Kion's team, if Fuli the Cheetah is a female, she could be Kion's close female cub friend. that would also avoid the issue of Romance as this is Disney not DreamWorks

One reason the "female lion cub?" idea came to me had to do with the creators introducing a female lion cub to give the girls in the audience a female main character to relate to, but possibly one or more members of the Lion Guard could fill that niche. Or maybe Kiara appears as a cub in some flashbacks, I have no idea.
Still, if Fuli the cheetah
were the only female cub seen in the show, you just know there would be a bunch of fans going crazy over that and designing litters of lion/cheetah hybrids -- biological incompatibility, schmiological incompatibility. (Oh -- speaking of friends of the opposite gender becoming future love interests...anyone remember Kopa's best friend in "Friends for Life"?)
By the way, one other item I haven't seen brought up is the line in
this article, which describes The Lion Guard as being "[g]eared towards kids age 2-7
and their families" (emphasis mine). Though this is a pretty minor detail, it seems somewhat promising. To me, it seems to be suggesting, "Yes, parents, you
will be able to watch this show with your kids without wanting to run screaming from the room", but then again, I might be reading a bit to much into it.
