What do we think?

Postby Moka » April 5th, 2024, 10:17 pm

Not expecting much, as live-action CGI lions are completely devoid of the magic Disney has long been known for, but hey, at least they're building on the canon for once.

The whole movie is apparently Rafiki telling Kiara about her grandfather, whom she never met.

A few things that stood out to me:
- Same director as the 2019 remake: meh
- Hans Zimmer: always good
- no Lebo M, unless Zimmer pulls him in again
- Seth Rogan as Pumbaa: should be good
- Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Scar: not british
- no James Earl Jones

Where'd you see it's the same director? The director for this one is Barry Jenkins

Since it has the same director as the live action remake I'm expecting it to be extremely mid but at least it's an original story for once. Even though I predict that it will borrow heavily from A Tale of Two Brothers which I'm actually pretty okay with since it will finally be canon.

I am apprehensive about the changes They seem to be making. I think turning Scar into a sympathetic villain is a very bad idea (If that is where They are going). With it being set in the CGI Universe nothing They do Here will affect the continuity of the original. It does seem however that The Name Taka will be canonized in at least "A" movie continuity so that means We can officially accept that as Scar's given name rather that just using it because We had nothing offical to go on.

I am very excited for this movie and with it being in the CGI Universe I can just let anything I don't like story-wise bounce off Me.

Can't we all?

After seeing the trailer, i am really excited to see how the story plays out and what Barry Jenkins does with the story (really appreciate his work since I saw Moonlight (2016)). However, the CGI sticks out like a sore thumb. I am pretty sure lots of hardwork was put by thousands of people to make the movie look great, but the fact is that it doesn't (in my eyes), the colors are bland, and it limits quite a lot what you can do with the story. Look what they did with puss in boots as an example, you can have colorful cgi, why don't just do it instead of this bland realistic mess? Why are Disney execs insisting on this technology?

@Iberian: Yes Everyone can let any problem They might have with this movie be written off by the fact that The CGI Universe is a different reality. My solution has probably been thought of by Everyone Else before I mentioned it.

I think the reason They are going with The realistic CGI is because They want it to look as different as possible from The Original. Imagine the backlash if They would have just made a strait-up CGI Animated remake of The Original. I thought The Remake was inferior as it was, but I would have been furious if They just gave The Original a CGI facelift.

Keith David is supposedly voicing Mufasa's biological Father in this movie. If this is true. I will be thrilled. I always wanted Him to do a Lion King voice. (My Ultimate Dream was for Him to play Nala's Father).

Hans Zimmer, has jumped of the boat on gladiator II, and he said he didn't like his own work on the lion king 2019 score. I also tought the same when hearing the score on the cinema. This was not a job of love, this was a rushed canned score that Hans was forced to do on a very tight schedule and they just wanted his name on the movie. Writing a score or any other creative endeavour cannot be rushed, it is a process that takes time.
These movies are pure cashgrabs made without love. The fault is of course not on the people working on these movies, is the execs and higher ups who pull the strings.

I think Hans returning for this project might be a good thing, or maybe not. I hope they were bright enough to let him do his own thing with the score.

there was a new preview trailer and a new full trailer is coming today

the movie looks far more interesting visually than the 2019 remake due to the cinematography. also, you can see young taka emote more like a human in this one.

like the first trailer there are scenes that look to be more for a musical number but with more dramatic choreography like it was from a 2D Disney movie.

whether this movie is good or not i think it is trying to correct some things people hated about the 2019 movie.
Why do we fall? So that we can learn to pick ourselves back up again.
