Mufasa helps him with advice. People complain about it because it happens too often but like you said, he's just a kid/cub. He's smart, a good leader, but he still needs help from those wiser than him.
I can buy that Kion can actually communicate with Mufasa because of the spiritual aspects of the roar, but the more effective scenes -- or at least the ones I've noticed viewers react to more intensely (in a positive manner) -- usually seem to be those in which Simba and Nala give advice and reassurance; basically when we get to see them actually be parents. Nala herself is such an underused character overall in this franchise, but she seems to be the rock of the nuclear family. Plus, she's voiced by Gabrielle Union here, who is a pretty decently-recognized actor and is probably one of the biggest names the show has; it would do Disney well to use her more in my opinion.
Most of his uh... villains have been pushovers. That's why he doesn't need Simba's help much. Zira is different. She isn't a pushover.
I think having beshte on the team is a bit OP. He's like The Incredible Hulk without the weaknesses of being uncontrollable. Kion is small, fierce, but it's the hippo that is to be feared.
The regular baddies on the show so far have been pretty light fare, although Makuu and Makucha are definitely not pushovers. If it weren't for Beshte and Kion's roar, I'm sure the Guard would've taken some casualties in their encounters. I do hope that there'll be an episode in which the Guard doesn't actually 'win'; I can see any future conflicts with Zira being potential fodder for that kind of storyline.
