Just to reiterate what I've been talking about on my Tumblr. I'm starting to become seriously annoyed at how TLG has made a habit out of erasing its female characters.
It was already clear when TLG was first being marketed that this was a boy's oriented show. I thought, with the help of a little viewer feedback, they might see that there are a ton of little girls who love The Lion Guard. Some who have a tomboyish streak and can enjoy the never-ending presence of Bunga, the ultimate little boy character along with literally everyone else in the show at this point, and some other little girls who prefer seeing actual female characters because they are easier to relate to. But so far, they haven't been getting a lot of this.
First, we have a Guard consisting of only one female, which is already sort of poor. Instead of giving Fuli the two episodes she deserves back-to-back to help explore her character and extend her screen-time - seeing how many episodes we've had focusing on everyone but her - we then get one moved to make way for an episode about the side-character... again. Yeah, you know, not Kion or anything. Not the protagonist. Or anyone who actually hasn't had the chance for the spot-light. Also, in the preview for the sole female's episode, who do we see splattered all over it? Yes, it's Bunga again. Joy!
Next, we have Nala's role as the saviour of the first movie completely erased in favour of making Timon and Pumbaa the center of yet ANOTHER episode with the side-character. Nala, a strong, persevering, hard-working female, in favour of the two laziest characters in the history of The Lion King. Ah yes, we get some funny toilet humour. That's all well and good when it's balanced out with something with a little more substance... such as a strong female lead that again, can I stress, we've been lacking.
Whenever Kiara is on the screen she's either joined by two constantly complaining friends or she's somehow made out to be a bore. So with Nala practically non-existent and Fuli only ever there to provide some dialogue any character could be landed with or help provide a solution to a situation, the same thing Beshte and Ono do half the time, we only really have Kiara to work with when it comes to real personality.
And so far, her personality isn't all that fun or engaging, the way Kion and Bunga's is. Her responsibility is made out to be boring, when really, she's just trying to do the same thing Simba would've went through if things hadn't turned out the way they had. In fact, it's almost purposely off-putting, though I'd hate to think Disney, in 2016, are actually trying to show that girls (some with responsibilities) are ALWAYS boring and the farting honey badger is definitely the more long-term-impacting screen presence.
Sorry, I'm just a little annoyed by how this is playing out. I feel so bad for those little girls who don't like Bunga and his antics all that much and want to love The Lion Guard and feel included, the way it should be, but can't, because Disney are literally providing no consistently strong female character.
