For me continuity is very important. No writer wants to be tied down by previous continuity when they are creating something new. However when working on a previously established franchise it is very important. If the new Star Wars movie were to take the approach that episodes 4-6 didn't happen Jedi and Sith alike would unite to crush Disney. Tight continuity is a big part of the success of the Marvel movies. Ant-Man (Which I felt was a very good movie) had the worst opening of any Marvel movie yet and it was still number #1 in the Box Office. Would it have been that successful if it was not part of The Marvel Cinematic Universe? I doubt it.
Reboots are O.K. but it is important that what came before be respected if not represented. One of My favorite properties Masters of the Universe has had a few reboots. (even to the point of having conflicting canons at the same time.). That works when the fan is then allowed to decide for themselves what elements of what canon they what to use. Perhaps this approach could be used on The Lion Guard.
It is also possible to enjoy a franchise that ignores it's own continuity such as The All Dogs Go To Heaven Franchise. However each film is (at least in my opinion) is somewhat lessened by the fact that the sequels ignore each other.
Then there are things like The Lion King that are so awesome and timeless that a reboot of any kind is not needed. If something is not broke don't fix it. If Lion Guard is an alternate continuity, to me that says that either Lion King 2 is to be forgotten, or Lion Guard it not to be taken seriously. That would put it in the same league as Timon and Pumbaa, which judging by the previews. It is already better than.
I think tying The Lion Guard in with Lion King 2 would ultimately lead to stronger stories and with the series being set within Lion King 2 writers would have all the freedom they needed, because there is so much of Kiara's life as a cub that we did not see. In fact the only characters that need to be alive at the end of the series are the ones in Lion King 2. Although I will be shocked if anyone actually dies in The Lion Guard.
Also by tying The Lion Guard in with Lion King 2 provides a better opportunity to grow the franchise. We have all seen Kiara grow up so what is Kion like as an adult.
