Kopa is better then Kiara is my opinion :3

I think it's because that since he's in debate over whether or not he's fannor or canon, he has no real backstory like all the other character and you can experiement with him more. One fanfic I read depicts him as a ghost cub watching over Kiara as she grows up in his place, one that has him return and fall in love with Vitani, take the throne from Kovu, and become king, and even another that has him as a psychotic murderer who kills Simba for no other reason than being his father. So really, he's basically your OC with the name Kopa.

This is what makes Kopa such a great character: He's an OC that everyone knows about, has only a very basic back-story (Simba's and Nala's son), and is almost limitless in opportunity to play around with. At the same time, when you say Kopa, people will know who you're referring to.

I think Kopa is real. My theory is this:

At the end of TLK, Kopa was presented. But somewhere between TLK and TLK2, Zira or some other Outlander killed him. Then, Nala had Kiara, because Simba and Nala looked considerably aged.

I know it's a short theory but that's what I think happened

Well yeah that is good for creative writing purposes, but for people who just like the films, he does not exist. Your average person who watched the first film and thinks "That was good, I should watch the sequel" will never be none the wiser about Kopa.

But the fact that Kopa is such a flexible character makes me dislike him even more. If he has no story, he has no personality.

He's a cute cub and very young, who need a story? We don't really know many of the characters backstories, or what happened after the movies (Besides T+P) we just get a vague idea and sometimes that's contradicted or not even told at all! I mean, we know Scar hates Mufasa, but when did this start? How did Scar GET his scar? Where did Zira come from? Are her cubs all actually siblings? How did Scar become friends with hyenas?

From what we know, Kopa is the kings son (if we follow the books and not movies) and he's fun and cute! I don't remember the stories, but I remember thinking he was a cool character. I think he's got a nice few stories and so what if he's not full canon? He's adorable and fun to theorise over (Most of the time ¬¬)
