I like Kovu's POTENTIAL character for a lot of reasons--he had a terrible cubhood and history, filled with his twisted mother's desires and having to live with her (probable) abuse and intense training with Vitani. He had to deal with a jealous loser big brother who probably didn't care all that much about him. Then, when he meets Kiara, a whole new realm of possibility becomes open to him in his mind--playing? Peace and happiness? It was unheard of before then.
He is raised to think that he is superior and strong, and that he deserves to be king over others. He is raised, thinking that Scar is the good guy and that Simba and Mufasa are the enemies, and in all fairness, it was Simba's throw into the hyenas that killed Scar, even if the hyenas were betrayed by Scar in the first place, and Simba banished Zira and her followers to the wretched Outlands, where he knew there was little food or water to be had.
I believe that Kovu has a naturally gentle and kind heart that has been corrupted and filled with Zira's twisted lies and dreams of the future and past. I think that he would have to struggle to let it out, and maybe have problems with his relationship with Kiara. I think he's prone to become an abuser if he's not careful and doesn't manage his anger...but that's just my opinion.
Design wise, I love Kovu! Such pretty eyes, and the angular features make him look very handsome. His body design, face shape, and mane are all totally different from any other Lion King character I've seen before, and even though he's kinda skinny, he still seems to exude power from his the way he stands and acts.

The face I wear behind my grin
