references to "the Circle of Life" during the movie

Postby thanigraphics » April 24th, 2010, 11:23 am

The Circle of Life is actually what's TLK all about. There are some visible references to this main point during the movie, and some quotes (but since we're all TLK addicts, I don't think I have to write them down here)
What I think it's funny, is that there are also indirect references of this "circle of life" for example when Mufasa is killed, the tree branche that's lays upon his body has the form of a broken circle: the circle of life has been broken (check out this pic)

While Simba grows up in the jungle with Timon and Pumbaa, and you see him maturing during "Hakuna Matata", there's the circle again: this time it's the moon, in the background, stating another big event in the life of Simba.

These are just two examples, but I love the way this is so subtilely done, and I'm curious if there are more of these references in SP?

The circle of life factors in death, so i'm not entirely sure the broken tree is a symbol of the broken circle, since Simba continues to live on.

That being said however I can see that it does contradict certain ideas that we are given about the circle of life, One example is that the death of one creature aids in the life of another. Mufasa's 'When we die we turn to grass' is the best analogy, where the body of a creature fertilizes lawn. However the gorge in which Mufasa died doesn't look like it can facilitate grass, so his body either goes to waste or gets picked at by vultures. (And since the tree is dead and broken, he cannot fertilise the tree).

Although facilitating life can be done in unexpected ways, after all the elephant graveyard seems another place where creatures go to die, and doesn't seem to facilitate life, however it seem,s quite a stable home for the hyenas, and therefore facilitates their life. Same can apply to Mufasa, in saving Simba he continued on the life of the younger being, in sacrificing himself he allowed his offspring to continue.

One could possibly go deeper and analyse other lyrics in the song, for example 'Its the leap of faith' and associate it with Simbas Leap into the thorn bush and further into the unknown, but I feel like I can live a pretty full life without doing that.

These seem like pretty loose connections to me. The tree, to me, doesn't look that much like a circle, or a broken one at that and, as the user above me pointed out, the circle of life wasn't broken.

As for the moon, I think they put Simba in front of the moon because it looked epic. I don't think there's any symbolism there. Quite honestly, I think we're taking this too far and thinking about it too hard.

hmmm, maybe the broken tree symbolize the broken circle of life for a person, well for a lion in this case, that's my opinion

The first pic, I think to be quite honest the tres is broken because there was a stampede a second ago.
The 2nd pic, again if you mean the circle being broken (which would inidcate premature death, I guess) well, no one is dead here.
I do not think there is any symbolism here, i'm not saying you are wrong and can't argue against OP because there is no evidence for either side that I know of. It's just that imo it's all just a coincidene, but you could be onto something and it's still very well observed :).

@SS01 / TPAM: I think the bit of text that you quoted from MWIN;s post, he was talking about the 2nd picture. Where the moon takes the form of a broken cirle of sorts, which would indicate death and yeah.. like I said in my post, no one is dead there. I dunno though, he didn't say :/
