Because the animators were too lazy to even bother giving her a bigger role.

meh, I that's one of the many reasons I don't like the second movie so well. they completely screwed up Simba's and Nala's personalities. in the first movie, Nala is a very strong female character who's never afraid to back down from what she believes. she's a natural leader and always concerned about her pride and friends. in the second movie, she's practically not involved in anything important. maybe the people doing TLK 2 just didn't pay enough attention to the first movie.

I don't find that to be true, at least in regards to Nala's character. The reason why I believe that Nala didn't have a bigger role in TLK2SP is because she'd overshadow Kiara's role if she did. There obviously was a huge fan base for Nala by the time TLK2SP was being planned and in order to have the movie's focus to be centered around Kiara, they had to down-play Nala's character which is understandable. I don't think they were just lazy with not giving her enough screen time. She pretty much does the same thing that she did in TLK, which was to help convince Simba to do the right thing, which in the case of TLK2SP, was to give Kovu a chance. Again though, this is just my opinion. :)

This is another reason why a TLK3 might not be as good as we'd all hope for lol. They'd have to downplay each original character's roles even further :\

The more characters one adds into a story, the less time each character is going to have dedicated to him/her, it's only natural. I mean, the only way you can rectify that is making the story/movie longer, which sometimes simply isn't possible/necessary. Plus, this was Kiara's movie really, and Simba's to a lesser extent. In retrospect, I don't even see how they could've made Nala's part larger and if it would even be necessary. Her role in SP, although small, was still important, at least to me. She could've gotten a bigger role, but that could've drastically changed the movie as we know it.

And echoing Mike, that's why another TLK (at least, one that starts where SP left off) might not be the best idea. If more characters are added (which would be likely), more characters' roles will probably be downplayed.
