On the ''making of'' The Lion King on Broadway, they said very happily that the entire movie fit into the first act alone. Not cool, Disney. Not cool.
Yeah, I would have loved to see a 2.5 hour epic instead of the 1.5 hour epic.
Then, by all means, watch
The Lion King on Broadway. I know you did anyway. However, it's the closest form of media we have that fleshes out and expands the subplots of the original film adding more depth to the storyline. Without the intermission between the two acts, the entire musical is over 2 hours.
If I could change one thing with the original film, I would change NOTHING! I would wish the movie was longer, and the filmmakers fleshed out the storyline a bit more. However, you know the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The original 88-minute film still sells well with audiences without complaint hence the success of the 3D release last year. So why must Disney change their film? They tried once, and got negative feedback about it. They would be wise enough to not try it again.
If I could change one thing about
The Lion King II, I would add a scene that details the backstory of Zira and the Outsiders that would connect the two films together. Or better yet, have Kovu help Simba try to save Kiara. Have the entire scene mirror Simba's nightmare earlier in the film. So when Simba finally grasps Kiara's paw after Zira falls to her death, and have Simba's other paw slip, and then have Kovu grab it, and say, "Trust me", in a kindly manner. Simba sees past his hatred of him depicted in his nightmare, and sees the goodness in Kovu, and that's why he accepts him (along with the Outsiders) into the Pride Lands.
As for
1½, the purpose of that movie was to parody the original film, and see the movie from a comical viewpoint. It did just that, and there's no need for anything to be changed.
