If Zira did successfully overtake the Pridelands...?

Where do they go from there? Kovu becomes king but the food would run out. Then what do you think they'd have to do?

Maybe the Outsiders would run away and let the Pridelanders fend for themselves. They're sly enough to do that.

Heh, I think the Outlanders would have an uprising against Zira, kill her and leave to find food, leaving the Pridelands barren. And then... Kiara's daughter/son thingy returns to the Pridelands to fix it

Well, this what-if scenario would have be a fanfiction story, and would a rehash of The Lion King since Kiara, the protagonist, lives in the Pridelands for some time, sees her father defeated by a dark-skinned lion, lives in exile as an adult, and has to confront her father's challenger. Anyway, it would be an interesting, epic scenario, but I'm glad The Lion King II filmmakers avoided this route.

My version of the story would be if Kovu just severely beaten Simba (though he is in love with Kiara, but was pressured to do it), and the Outsiders overwhelm the Pridelanders in an ambush, thus leaving the Pridelands in control of the Outsiders with Kovu, guilty as ever, as their king. Kiara, Nala, and the Pridelanders take their fallen leader to an oasis, and nurse him back to health. Kiara tells her father who is beginning to recover from his injuires that she wants to confront Kovu and Zira, and tells the Outsiders that "We are One". Simba is reminded of these words, though he is not sure whether to forgive the Outsiders. However, Simba begins to assemble the Pridelanders to prepare to take back the Pridelands, though Kiara is left behind. The pride returns to Pride Rock, and a battle erupts (with a fiery background) while Zira attacks Simba, and the two engage in a fight.

Kiara runs back home, and with Kovu's help, stops the fight. Kiara forgives Kovu for what he did, and tells the pride that "We are One", while Kovu stands up to her mother. The Outsiders realize that fighting is pointless, and Zira, who is left all alone, decides to attack Kiara for turning her son and her pride against her, and the two tangled off the edge of Pride Rock, which ends with Zira falling into the fire, and she dies. The two prides become one; Simba becomes king again and he, Nala, Kiara, and Kovu roar out to the Pridelands that peace is restored.

Why are we assuming that the food would run out? I always thought it ran out in the first movie due to Scar feeding hundreds of hyenas combined with a drought. With that being said, I could only see trouble because Kovu would have made a pretty horrible king at that point in his life.

I would assume that it would be Scar's reign all over again. Zira had plenty of planning on how to take over the Pridelands (like Scar), but no plan of what to actually do afterwards once the lands are conquered. (Again, like Scar).

But because Simba wouldn't be in some jungle away to help the Pridelanders again, this time would finally be the forced suicide that Scar nearly brought the Pridelands to.

The food wouldn't run out under Zira's rule. Even with the hyenas living on the Pridelands, that wouldn't have destabilized the ecosystem. Both lions and hyenas are carnivores, so the herbivore population would be decreasing. With that in mind, the plant life should be thriving better than ever. In the original TLK, the barren Pridelands is only a form of symbolism, further reinforcing the idea that Scar isn't a good leader. In real life, the circle of life does not need a king to be at the top of the food chain. Overpopulation and underpopulation constantly corrects itself. However, for cinematic purposes, if Kovu did become king the Pridelands, I'm sure the landscape would look barren once again.

I'd assume that if Zira succesfully took over the Pridelands that she's probably execute many of Simba's closest companions. I'm pretty sure she'd eat Timon and Pumbaa (or maybe I'm just hoping she would...). I think the Pridelands would stay the same though, after all, she's not bringing in hundreds of hyenas. ^^
