The Outlanders

Postby MrsTimon » April 13th, 2011, 6:49 am

Hi everyone, something that I've wondered for a while about the outsiders, infact I've wondered this since the first time I saw SP and just wanted to know what everyone else thought.

There seems to be quite a lot of lionesses in the outsider group and they obviously weren't shown in the first film but must have been around then (as Scar had chosen Kovu to take over the pridelands, so he must have known Zira in the first film even though we don't see her) but I've always wondered, where the outsider lions originally nice pridelander lions like Sarabi and Sarafina where? Where they any of the background lionesses in The Lion King even when Mufasa was around who where just as nice as Sarafina and Sarabi or even friends with the two of them, but once Scar took over they where eventually brainwashed by him or just chose to agree with what he was doing? Or are they supposed to be completely different lions that had nothing to do with the first film at all? :?

I think that some of the lionesses were previously in the Pridelands during Mufasa's reign, but most of them (including Zira) came into the Pridelands during Scar's reign. They only witnessed Scar as king, and didn't realize how good Mufasa was as a king and how bad Scar had made everything. I also think Scar told them that he was the rightful king and never mentioned Simba, so the new lionesses didn't believe Simba when he came back. Therefore they disagreed when Simba came back, and he banished them.
I don't agree when you say that Zira was there during the first film, I think she was only there during Scar's reign. I believe that a group of lionesses, lead by Zira, left a previous pride and found Scar who accepted them. They then thought that Scar was the rightful leader.

Yeah I never thought about the lionesses joining as Scar was king, that seems to add up well.

The reason I say Zira must have been somewhere in Scars life is because she said herself in SP that Scar had hand chosen Kovu (who she says is her son) to take his place, so that sounds like he must have known her somehow and since he dies at the end of the first one it leads me to believe he knew her off screen as The Lion King took place.

Yes, I've always believed that the outlanders with the normal pridelander noses were there offscreen during Mufasa's time as king, and I believe that the outlanders with the pointly outsider noses (including Zira) came from another pride entirely and thought Scar was the rightful king. So there's nothing left but for me to believe that the outlanders with the pridelander noses were brainwashed by Scar.

^ Going off of that, I think they came from a completely separate pride because they don't physically resemble the Pridelanders at all, and in the first film all the lionesses look like Pridelanders. So I think they must have either been bands of rogues desperate for a leader, or a weak pride that only followed Scar because of what he promised them (sort of like Hitler to the Germans). I think when Kiara said, "We are One", she was referring to the fact that they're all part of the same lion family so they shouldn't be trying to slaughter one another. In reality both sides are after the same thing: peace and a good leader to look after them. :)

I always thought that a few of the lionesses were probably from the Pridelands. They may have been born while Scar was king, since none of the lionesses in TLK have the Outlander "look" aside from Scar. So some of them were very likely Scar's daugthers. Others were probably a separate pride that Scar took in. None of the lionesses who had lived under Mufasa's reign would have been likely to submit to be his queen. They may have been forced to mate with him (hence some of his daughters would have been of Prideland blood). So Scar took in Zira and her followers (my gut says Zira was the matriarch before Scar ever got to her and she was in all likelihood his Queen though we don't see her at all in TLK). They were, perhaps, part of the pride that Scar's own mother was from (they all share the same facial features - the nose shape the most visible feature). Again, I assume that Uru was the one who carried the Outlander look, since we never see a design for her and the design for Ahadi (although flawed - he's written with a black mane but drawn with a mane similiar to Mufasa's color) shows only the Prideland look.

This would also explain why the Outlanders all seem to view Scar as the rightful king of the Pridelands. Some would be of his own blood (and therefore want to believe that he was the rightful king). The rest would have been taken in by him. Neither group would have known Mufasa. The Prideland mothers might have told Scar's daughters about Mufasa, but probably not. They would have feared retribution from Scar for talking about his brother (as Scar says to Zazu in TLK - "You know the law! Never, ever mention THAT name in my presence!"). By the time Simba returns from his self-imposed exile and defeats Scar, some of the Prideland mothers would have been dead (old age, starvation, illness, etc). So there wouldn't have been too much opposition to banishing the daughters of those Prideland mothers, the ones who had been essentially brainwashed into thinking that their father was the rightful king and Simba was a big brute who came along and caused their father's death.

All in theory of course. They may have all been from an outside pride that Scar took in. But I am fairly certain that none of the Outlanders were originially Pridelanders that had been around when Mufasa was king.

Yeah that makes sence, I always thought that if some of the outlanders had been part of Mufasa's pride then became brainwashed by Scar that it seemed deeper and more scary. But I guess no one could side with someone who had them living in the conditions they where in with Scar.

Another great theory Starlight Lioness, I also think that after Simba exiled the Outlanders. Zira may have recruited rogue lioness into her ranks.

Thank you! :) True, Zira could have recruited even more rogues once she secured a place at Scar's side.
