It's a death scene.. Usually the idea is to evoke emtion by the viewer. Plus the fact that it was his father, which people can relate to sometimes.

And IMO the scene where Mufasa died (or rather, is dead) is 50 % of the movie's negative emotions (the other 50% being the end, Simba walking up Pride Rock). It was a magnificent scene, especially at the time for Disney to suddenly come out with something so emotionally disrtaughting and probably still one of the best moments in cinema history.

And Scar in that scene... Oh my "If it wasn't for you, he'd still be alive" "What will your mother think?" That is insanely evil, like really... How could you say that? XD

I think it was even more evil when he told his own brother "long live the king" and released his grip. It takes a truely nasty person to kill anyone from their own family.

But this means to the movie, exactly what Flip said. It's meant to make a negative emotion on someone. Some people can certainly relate to this, and that's why they did it. It's also a way of helping people cope with their lives. It makes people understand that even though life is harsh sometimes, you still have to remember who you are.

And I aswell to this day, think it's one of cinemas greatest scenes, and a very good emotion inflicting scene, aswell.

cliffhanger is what they call such a moment, right? but yeah, this moment is very crucial in the movie since it changes simbas life and makes him, the main character, what he is today :P

I guess it's necessary for the sake of the Pridelands being reborn after Scar is killed. I dunno maybe the Pridelands needed a new layer of grass.

The death of Mufasa is crucial to the movie. If he hadn’t died (or rather, if he hadn’t been killed) Simba would have been a very different character, and the movie would lose a major theme: Dealing with feelings of grief, loss, shame, guilt.. The story would have been completly different, although Mufasas death is heartbreaking, it marks a turning point in the story, and something that will change the character of Simba forever.
